Real Madrid effortlessly claimed the top spot in La Liga with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Getafe on Thursday.

Under the guidance of manager, Carlo Ancelotti, Real Madrid now sit two points ahead of surprise title contenders Girona, as both teams have completed 22 matches.

In the first half of the La Liga clash yesterday, Joselu, the striker, put Madrid in the lead with a powerful header, and early in the second half, he sealed the victory with another clinical finish, asserting his team’s dominance over their mid-table opponents.

Despite creating several other opportunities, the Spanish Super Cup champions were unable to extend their lead in the local derby just a few kilometres south of the Spanish capital.

With a 10-point lead, Madrid currently outshines their rivals, Atletico Madrid in third place and Barcelona in fourth.

Joselu and Vinicius Junior posed a threat in the initial stages of the match before Madrid took the lead. Lucas Vazquez, who started as a right-back to provide Dani Carvajal with some rest, delivered a cross that Joselu, the Spanish international, expertly headed home while effortlessly fending off his marker.

Rodrygo was replaced by the target man in the starting lineup as Ancelotti made changes ahead of the derby against Atletico Madrid on Sunday.

Real Madrid dominated the first half but suffered a setback when defender Antonio Rudiger had to leave the field due to injury.

In the second half, Eduardo Camavinga came on as a substitute, with Aurelien Tchouameni moving to the centre-back position.

Madrid continued to attack and soon scored their second goal. Vinicius made an incisive pass from just inside the area, allowing Joselu to finish off a smooth team move.

Although Joselu had the opportunity to complete a hat-trick, he unselfishly passed to Vinicius, whose shot was saved by David Soria, denying Madrid a third goal.

Vinicius then missed another clear chance as he attempted to lob Soria, who made a chest save. Madrid came close to regretting their missed opportunities, but Andriy Lunin tipped Borja Mayoral’s shot onto the post.
