Sporting Cp Wins Liga Portugal Following Benfica’s Defeat
Sporting Lisbon won their second Portuguese championship in 21 years on Sunday, as Benfica’s defeat secured their victory. The reigning champions faltered with a 2-0 loss to Famalicao, while Sporting’s triumphant team secured the title with a resounding 3-0 victory over Portimonense on Saturday.
Sporting, who have scored a remarkable 92 goals in 32 matches, are comfortably leading the division with an eight-point advantage over Benfica. With only two games left to play, Sporting is in a strong position to secure the title.
Ruben Amorim’s team has suffered only two defeats this season road to claiming the club’s 20th league championship, placing them behind Porto with 30 titles and Benfica, the record holders with 38 titles.
Swedish forward Viktor Gyokeres’ goals have powered Sporting’s title success and he netted his 27th of the campaign on Saturday to wrap up their victory.
The striker signed from Coventry City last summer for a club-record fee of €20 million plus add-ons.
Former Benfica player Amorim has now delivered the second league title to the club, having previously led Sporting to glory in the 2020/21 season.
Sporting will have the opportunity to secure a double when they face Porto in the Portuguese Cup final on May 26th.
