Arsenal In Advanced Talks To Sign Viktor Gyokeres From Sporting CP
Arsenal are in advanced talks with Sporting CP over a deal to sign Viktor Gyokeres.
While a deal has not yet been finalized due to ongoing discussions over the transfer fee, progress is being made toward reaching an agreement.
Personal terms are in place on a proposed five-year contract, the Sweden international having prioritised a switch to Arsenal for some time.
Arsenal manager, Mikel Arteta is eager to finalize the transfer of Viktor Gyokeres before the team begins pre-season training. Gyokeres is one of Europe’s most in-demand players after scoring 54 goals in 52 matches during the 2024-25 season.
Sporting CP’s success in winning the Portuguese league and cup double has boosted Gyokeres’s profile among top European clubs.
On March 30, The Athletic reported that Arsenal was showing strong interest in Viktor Gyokeres, who had been on their radar for some time, with their new sporting director, Andrea Berta, an admirer.
Sporting president Frederico Varandas later stated that the club had not received any offers for the striker and would not be swayed by “blackmail and insults.”
Despite ongoing speculation, Gyokeres’s future remains uncertain as discussions continue.
Since joining Sporting from Coventry City in 2023, Gyokeres has scored 97 goals in 102 matches. Gyokeres moved to English football in 2017-18 when joining Brighton & Hove Albion, but made just eight appearances for the south-coast club and scored one goal.
After loan spells at St. Pauli and Swansea City, he then joined Coventry, initially on loan, for whom he scored 43 goals across two and a half seasons before his move to Portugal.
Arsenal has been monitoring RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko for some time as they look to strengthen Mikel Arteta’s squad with an additional forward.
The 22-year-old, who signed a new contract with Leipzig last summer, faces an uncertain future due to the club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League. This has heightened the likelihood of a summer transfer.
That new contract removed a €65m release clause but was signed with a mutual understanding that when they right project arrived, Sesko would be allowed to leave for a fair price.
During the latter part of the 2024-25 season, Arsenal lacked a recognized No. 9 due to serious injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus in January and February.
In their absence, midfielder Mikel Merino frequently stepped in as a striker.
Arsenal has now completed the transfers of goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea and Spain international midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.
