Barcelona Beats Lyon To Win Third Women’s Champions League Title In Four Years
Barcelona’s women’s team secured their third Women’s Champions League title in four years by overcoming Lyon in a thrilling 2-0 victory.
The game unfolded at San Mames Stadium in the Basque Country, with a record crowd of 50,827 spectators witnessing history as Barcelona stood firm against Lyon, the most successful club in women’s football with eight European trophies to their name.
The Catalan club had never won in four previous matches against Lyon. Barcelona became the third club with three Women’s Champions League titles, behind the eight of Lyon and the four of Eintracht Frankfurt.
Barcelona’s win further solidifies their recent supremacy in women’s football. This marked their fourth consecutive appearance in the Women’s Champions League final, with victories in the previous two years.
Lyon competed in its 11th final in 15 seasons, aiming to secure its first title since defeating Barcelona in the 2022 final. Lyon also emerged victorious against Barcelona in the 2019 final.
The match was evenly contested from the outset, with both teams struggling to generate clear scoring chances. Lyon was unlucky early on as they hit the woodwork, while their goalkeeper Christiane Endler calmly dealt with any threats at the opposite end.
Throughout the majority of the match, Lyon effectively contained Aitana Bonmatí, but she finally found a breakthrough in the 63rd minute. Making a skillful run into the area, she unleashed a left-footed shot that found the net, with the ball deflecting off Lyon defender Vanessa Gilles’ leg.
Former world player of the year, Alexia Putellas, entered the game in the second half and capped it off with a goal in stoppage time. Her celebration included taking off her jersey and running towards the fans.
Aitana Bonmatí was named the player of the match.
