Barcelona Thrashes Sevilla To Keep Laliga Title Hopes Alive
Barcelona displayed their determination and skill at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, overcoming a challenging match against Sevilla to secure a crucial 4-1 victory.
This win marked the ninth triumph in their last eleven games, reigniting Barça’s hopes in the La Liga title race, particularly after rivals dropped points in the Madrid derby.
Fast-Paced Start
The match began with an electrifying pace, as Barcelona quickly demonstrated their attacking intent.
Just seven minutes into the game, a well-executed corner routine saw Raphinha deliver a perfectly floated ball into the box. Iñigo Martínez, with a deft header, redirected the ball into the path of Robert Lewandowski, who made no mistake in prodding it home.
However, Barcelona’s defensive frailties were exposed almost immediately. Sevilla responded with vigor, equalizing just a minute later.
A swift counter-attack saw Saúl break through the Barcelona defense, squaring the ball to Rubén Vargas, who fired it into the net. This goal extended Barcelona’s unfortunate streak to six consecutive games without a clean sheet on the road in La Liga, highlighting ongoing defensive issues that needed addressing.
Battle of Chances
As the first half progressed, both teams exchanged opportunities, with Barcelona looking to reclaim the lead and Sevilla aiming to exploit their home advantage. Raphinha, a standout performer for Barça, had a long-range effort saved, while Jules Koundé wasted a chance from the edge of the box, sending his shot over the bar.
Lamine Yamal despite a quieter night than usual, managed to test the Sevilla goalkeeper with a shot at the near post.
Sevilla nearly took the lead before halftime, with Dodi Lukebakio attempting an overhead kick that was brilliantly denied by Wojciech Szczęsny. The first half ended with both teams locked at 1-1, setting the stage for an exciting second half.
Second Half
The second half kicked off in a manner reminiscent of the first, with Barcelona striking early.
Within a minute of the restart, a quick passing move culminated in Pedri delivering a precise ball into the box, where Fermín López expertly nodded it in to restore Barça’s lead.
However, the defensive lapses that plagued the first half reared their head again as Sevilla almost equalized immediately, only to be denied by the linesman’s offside flag.
Sevilla’s attacking qualities were evident as they continued to threaten Barcelona’s defense. Isaac Romero slid the ball across the box for Vargas, who appeared poised to score but was ruled offside, a moment that would prove pivotal in the match.
Barcelona capitalized on this let-off, extending their lead in the 55th minute with a stunning strike from Raphinha, who powered the ball home from the edge of the box, marking his 24th goal of the season.
Late Drama
With a comfortable two-goal lead, Barcelona faced a setback when Fermín López received a yellow card for a challenge on Djibril Sow. Following a lengthy VAR review, the yellow card was upgraded to a red, leaving Barcelona to navigate the final stages of the match with ten men.
Despite this disadvantage, Sevilla failed to capitalize, struggling to break down a resolute Barcelona defense.
In a surprising turn of events, Barcelona added a fourth goal late in the match. Eric García rose to meet a corner, sending a powerful header into the net, sealing the victory and moving Barça within a point of second-placed Atlético Madrid and just two points shy of leaders Real Madrid.
