Bellingham Brothers’ Club World Cup Battle In Doubt As One Faces Surprise Suspension
During Borussia Dortmund’s 2-1 victory over CF Monterrey in the round of 16, Jobe Bellingham received his second yellow card of the tournament, which will cause him to miss the upcoming quarter-final match against Real Madrid.
As a result, he won’t be able to face his brother Jude in what would have been their first competitive meeting.
This is “very annoying for him, for all of us. That’s the story we wanted to write,” said sporting director Sebastian Kehl: “It’s very, very bitter for him. He was really looking forward to playing against his brother. We have to comfort him a little.”
Coach Niko Kovac emphasised, “We all saw he was very disappointed. He didn’t realise that the second yellow would immediately result in a suspension.”
In the 28th minute, Bellingham arrived too late in a tackle with Monterrey’s Nelson Deossa, leading to his second yellow card of the tournament.
His first yellow card was received during the group stage in the 1-0 win against Ulsan Hyundai from South Korea.
Since joining Borussia Dortmund at the beginning of June, the 19-year-old quickly became a regular at the Club World Cup, starting every game after his debut in the first group match against Fluminense.
