Chelsea Exploring Goalkeeper Options After Robert Sánchez Admission
Chelsea has emerged as a contender to compete with Manchester United for Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper, Gregor Kobel, amid rising concerns regarding Robert Sanchez’s recent performances.
Sanchez is under immense pressure after a series of high-profile errors between the posts for Chelsea, with his mistake in the 3-1 defeat to Manchester City the fifth that has led to a goal this season.
Manager Enzo Maresca has chosen not to publicly criticize Sanchez, which has frustrated many Chelsea fans.
However, The Independent reports that there is a private acknowledgment that the 27-year-old may not be the best fit for Maresca’s team.
Kobel is once again named as a significant target for Chelsea, who were first linked with the Dortmund stopper late last year.
There are also connections between Kobel and Manchester United, who, similar to Chelsea, may need to make a decision on a new goalkeeper this summer as Andre Onana continues to face challenges with individual errors.
However, it is recognized that United has more pressing issues to resolve in the transfer market and is unlikely to pursue a new goalkeeper aggressively.
The Athletic emphasized that Chelsea will not pursue a replacement for Sanchez this month and raised questions about whether the club will consider signing a new goalkeeper in the summer.
Filip Jorgensen, a 22-year-old signed from Villarreal last year, is viewed as a player with great potential, while there is considerable anticipation around 19-year-old Mike Penders, who is set to join from Genk in June for a fee of £17 million.
Maresca has recognized that his high-risk style of play is likely to result in mistakes from his goalkeepers.
He has even stated that he would only worry about Sanchez if the Spaniard ceased to take the considerable risks that have left fans feeling frustrated this season.
