FA Cup Fifth Round Preview: Chelsea, Man City, And Arsenal Face Tricky Tests
The magic of the FA Cup continues this weekend as several heavyweights battle for a place in the quarter-finals.
While top clubs are expected to progress, the competition’s reputation for giant-killing means nothing can be taken for granted.
Championship high-flyers Wrexham dream of a historic upset against Chelsea, while Newcastle United host defending champions Manchester City in a blockbuster tie.
Wrexham vs Chelsea
The spotlight will fall on North Wales as Wrexham attempt to pull off one of the biggest upsets of this season’s FA Cup when they host Chelsea at the iconic Racecourse Ground.
It will be the first competitive meeting between the two clubs since 1982, and Wrexham enter the contest full of belief after already knocking out Premier League opposition earlier in the competition.
Phil Parkinson’s side produced a thrilling performance to eliminate Nottingham Forest on penalties after a dramatic 3-3 draw before edging past Ipswich Town in the fourth round.
The Welsh club’s resurgence in recent years has been remarkable. Backed by Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Wrexham have become one of football’s most talked-about projects.
Their recent league form has also been impressive. After sitting 14th in the Championship before Christmas, Parkinson’s men have surged into the playoff places following nine wins from their last 13 league matches.
A memorable 5-3 victory over Sheffield United on Boxing Day sparked the remarkable turnaround.
Wrexham will also take confidence from their strong home record. The Red Dragons have won their last three matches at the Racecourse Ground, scoring eight goals and creating an atmosphere that has proven intimidating for visiting teams.
However, stopping Chelsea will require another level of performance entirely. The London club has an excellent record in the FA Cup against lower-division opposition, winning 24 consecutive matches against teams from outside the Premier League.
Chelsea’s last defeat to such opposition came in a shocking 4-2 loss against Bradford City in 2015 a match ironically masterminded by Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson.
Now managed by Liam Rosenior, Chelsea have progressed comfortably through the early rounds of this season’s competition. The Blues defeated Charlton Athletic 5-1 before easing past Hull City 4-0.
Despite some inconsistent league results recently against Leeds United, Burnley, and Arsenal, Chelsea regained confidence with an impressive 4-1 win over Aston Villa in midweek, inspired by a superb performance from Joao Pedro.
Team News
Wrexham will be without several players due to injury including Matty James, Liberato Cacace, Thomas O’Connor, and Ben Sheaf.
Veteran striker Kieffer Moore could start after scoring 11 goals in the Championship this season. He is expected to be supported by Josh Windass, who boasts an excellent FA Cup scoring record.
Chelsea may rotate their squad slightly with goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen pushing to start ahead of Robert Sanchez.
Full-back Marc Cucurella and midfielder Romeo Lavia could return to the starting lineup, while Pedro Neto is available again after suspension.
Chelsea remain without Levi Colwill, Estevao Willian, Jamie Gittens, and Dario Essugo.
Prediction
Wrexham’s fearless attacking approach could cause problems early on, particularly in front of a passionate home crowd. However, Chelsea’s superior quality and squad depth should eventually prove decisive.
Prediction: Wrexham 1–3 Chelsea
Newcastle United vs Manchester City
One of the biggest ties of the round will take place at St James’ Park when Newcastle United face Manchester City for the fifth time this season in all competitions.
The rivalry between the two sides has produced mixed results this campaign. Newcastle secured a 2-1 victory in the Premier League earlier in the season, but City responded by winning the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final clash 2-0.
Newcastle head into the match on the back of a dramatic 2-1 victory over Manchester United in midweek.
Despite playing the entire second half with 10 men after the dismissal of Jacob Ramsey, Eddie Howe’s side showed resilience to claim all three points thanks to a late goal from Will Osula.
Currently sitting 12th in the Premier League table, Newcastle still has work to do if it is to qualify for European football next season. Progress in the FA Cup could therefore represent a valuable opportunity for silverware.
Manchester City, meanwhile, arrives after being held to a 2-2 draw by Nottingham Forest. Pep Guardiola’s side have fallen seven points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, although they still have a game in hand.
City will also have one eye on their upcoming UEFA Champions League clash against Real Madrid, which could influence Guardiola’s team selection.
Nevertheless, the Citizens boast a formidable FA Cup record, winning 18 of their last 20 matches in the competition over the past four seasons.
Team News
Newcastle will be without suspended midfielder Jacob Ramsey, while injuries continue to sideline Bruno Guimaraes, Fabian Schar, Emil Krafth, and Lewis Miley.
Forward Harvey Barnes could start after contributing five goal involvements in seven FA Cup home matches.
Manchester City remain without defender Josko Gvardiol and midfielder Mateo Kovacic through injury.
However, star striker Erling Haaland is available after recovering from a minor injury and could again lead the attack.
Prediction
This promises to be a tight and entertaining encounter between two attacking sides. While Newcastle will be dangerous at home, Manchester City’s quality in key moments could prove decisive.
Prediction: Newcastle United 1–2 Manchester City
Mansfield Town vs Arsenal
League One side Mansfield Town will attempt to produce a famous FA Cup shock when they host Premier League leaders Arsenal at Field Mill.
Mansfield have already demonstrated their giant-killing credentials this season by defeating Burnley 2-1 in the previous round.
However, their league form has dipped since that historic victory. Nigel Clough’s side have gone four League One matches without a win and currently sit 16th in the table.
Despite those struggles, the occasion will be historic for the club. Mansfield have not reached the FA Cup fifth round in 51 years, and Saturday’s match represents their first meeting with Arsenal in nearly a century.
Arsenal, meanwhile, continues to enjoy an exceptional season under Mikel Arteta.
The Gunners recently strengthened their grip on the Premier League title race with a 1-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion and currently sit seven points clear at the top of the table.
Their FA Cup campaign has also been convincing so far, with dominant victories over Portsmouth and Wigan Athletic.
Team News
Arsenal will definitely be without Mikel Merino, who is recovering from foot surgery.
Defenders William Saliba and Ben White are doubts, while captain Martin Odegaard is also struggling with a knee issue.
Midfielder Myles Lewis-Skelly will miss the match due to suspension.
Mansfield captain Ryan Sweeney is ruled out with a hamstring injury, while Baily Cargill could miss the remainder of the season.
Prediction
Mansfield’s passion and home support could make the match competitive early on, but Arsenal’s superior quality should ultimately shine through.
Prediction: Mansfield Town 0–3 Arsenal
