Gabigol Suspended for Two Years by Brazilian Sports Court for Attempted Anti-Doping Fraud

Brazilian forward Gabriel Barbosa, also known as Gabigol has been handed a two-year suspension by the Brazilian sports court for attempted anti-doping fraud. The incident in question took place on April 8, 2023, when Barbosa allegedly made it difficult to carry out an anti-doping test before a game in the Rio de Janeiro state league.

The Brazilian Doping Control Authority confirmed the decision, stating, “The aforementioned athlete was judged today by the Anti-Doping Sports Court of Justice, & it was decided that a violation of the anti-doping rule of attempted fraud had occurred.” This ruling has put Barbosa’s career on hold, with the ban set to begin on April 1.

Following the verdict, Flamengo, Barbosa’s club, expressed their surprise at the decision & vowed to support the player in his appeal. They stated, “(The club) will assist the athlete in presenting an appeal to CAS, since it understands that there was no fraud, not even an attempt, to justify the punishment applied.” Flamengo’s stance indicates their belief in Barbosa’s innocence & their commitment to helping him clear his name.

Barbosa, who joined Flamengo in 2020 after a successful loan spell from Inter Milan, responded to the suspension on social media, asserting his innocence. He stated, “I have never attempted to obstruct or defraud any test, & I trust that I will be cleared by the higher court.” The player emphasized his obedience to the rules of the game throughout his career & expressed disappointment at the outcome of the judgment.

Despite the setback, Barbosa remains hopeful that his innocence will be proven, allowing him to return to the field in the future. The forward, who has represented Brazil and played a key role in Flamengo’s success, including scoring the winning goal in the 2022 Copa Libertadores final, is determined to cooperate with the authorities & seek justice through the appeal process.
