Kevin De Bruyne Leaves Manchester City, Reflects On Proud Legacy
Kevin De Bruyne reflected on his time at Manchester City, feeling proud of his role in the club’s success.
He helped solidify City’s status as a dominant force in English football over the past decade. His final home match at the Etihad took place on Tuesday, marking the end of an era.
De Bruyne was honored before and after a 3-1 win over Bournemouth as City closed in on qualification for next season’s Champions League.
During a remarkable period of success, the Belgian midfielder secured six Premier League titles, five League Cups, two FA Cups, and the 2023 Champions League.
Accompanied by his family, he was feted with a post-game guard of honor from the City players and staff as the fans chanted, “Oh, Kevin De Bruyne!”
”To have almost a full stadium supporting my family and me says everything,” De Bruyne said. “Who can have 50,000 people waiting for you to say goodbye? It’s indescribable.”
The club announced they would erect a statue of him outside the stadium.
”It means I will always be part of this club,” De Bruyne added.
Over his career at City, he scored 108 goals and delivered 177 assists in more than 400 appearances. His achievements have cemented his legacy as one of the greatest players in Premier League history.
”It’s been an unbelievable ride, an absolute pleasure,” De Bruyne told Sky Sports.
”I want to bring joy to people, play offensive football, and be creative; that is what I am on the pitch, and I want to have fun. I think we had a lot of fun over the 10 years.
”You win, you lose sometimes. It was a joy working really hard and creating something for this club which brought the club much better than it was before. I’m super proud.”
However, Kevin De Bruyne’s final evening at the Etihad didn’t end with a memorable goal, as he missed a great opportunity.
Seizing a perfect pass from Omar Marmoush, the 33-year-old struck the crossbar instead of finding the net, leaving himself “no excuses” for the slight mistake before taking the shot.
”It’s terrible. There’s no excuse!” He added. “My son is going to be very tough on me today.”
