Lagos Announces Traffic Diversions As 2024 Lagos City Marathon Begins Saturday

The 2024 Lagos City Marathon begins tomorrow, Saturday, February 10, Sportxparte reports.

Due to this, the state government has made an announcement regarding the closure of several major roads in the city in preparation for the event.

The State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, released a statement on Friday stating that certain routes will be temporarily inaccessible to motorists during the sporting event.

From 5.00 am to 2.00 pm, the following major routes will be closed: Funsho Williams Avenue, Ikorodu Road, Gbagada to Third Mainland Bridge, Dolphin Road to Alfred Rewane Road, Falomo Roundabout to Bourdillon Road, Lekki Bridge to Freedom Way, and Akin-Adesola to Ahmadu Bello Way.

However, the commissioner has assured the public that alternative routes will be provided to ensure smooth traffic flow during the marathon. According to the statement, drivers have two options to reach their desired destination. They can either drive through Apongbon Bridge towards Eko Bridge or pass through Costain Roundabout, Iponri, and Bode Thomas.

According to Osiyemi, the 3rd Mainland Bridge will be closed to drivers from midnight tonight until the marathon is over, as stated by the individual.

The commissioner announced that motorists could alternatively choose to go via Victoria Island to reach Independence Bridge and CMS Bridge.

This route will enable them to access Apongbon, leading towards Ijora-Olopa and Iddo. Additionally, they can proceed to Oyingbo and connect to Herbert Macaulay Road for their onward journeys.

Moreover, it was stated by him that the diversion will not impact any journeys originating from Ikorodu Road and Funsho Williams Avenue towards Lagos Island. In addition, officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority will be positioned at the diversion points to guarantee seamless traffic movement and ensure the safety of drivers.

The government has issued a strong recommendation for drivers who do not have any pressing matters to avoid the marathon diversion routes.

Additionally, they have stressed that regular traffic conditions on the 3rd Mainland Bridge will promptly return once the marathon concludes.
