Osimhen Shines As Nigeria Beat Gabon In Extra Time To Reach CAF World Cup Playoff Final

‎Nigeria took a major step toward reclaiming its place on the world stage as Victor Osimhen’s extra-time heroics fired the Super Eagles to a thrilling 4-1 victory over Gabon in Thursday’s CAF World Cup playoff semifinal in Rabat, Morocco.

‎First-Half Frustration

‎The opening exchanges were cagey, with both sides struggling to adapt to the slippery conditions caused by heavy rain in Rabat.

‎Nigeria’s early dominance yielded little end product as Gabon’s compact defence, anchored by the experienced Mario Lemina, kept Osimhen and his teammates largely at bay.

‎However, persistence paid off midway through the second half when Sevilla striker Akor Adams capitalised on a dreadful defensive mix-up in the Gabon backline.

‎His calm finish put Nigeria 1-0 ahead lifting the Super Eagles’ spirits.

‎Just when it seemed Eric Chelle’s men would cruise into the final, Mario Lemina’s deflected effort found its way into the Nigerian net late on, levelling the score at 1-1 and forcing extra time.

‎Osimhen Steps Up When It Matters Most

‎Victor Osimhen, who had earlier missed a golden chance in stoppage time when one-on-one with the goalkeeper, refused to let that moment define him.

‎The Galatasaray forward, fresh from his hat-trick against Benin in October, found redemption in the extra period.

‎Nigeria regained control through Chidera Ejuke, who coolly slotted home after a clever assist from Wilfred Ndidi to restore the lead. Moments later, Osimhen made amends with a clinical strike smashing home from close range to make it 3-1 and effectively seal the contest.

‎Early in the second half of extra time, Victor brought down a looping ball with finesse, powering into space, and finishing with typical composure to complete his brace and Nigeria’s 4-1 rout.

‎Focus Turns to the Final

‎With the win, Nigeria advances to Sunday’s CAF World Cup playoff final, where they will face either Cameroon or DR Congo for a coveted place in next March’s inter-continental playoffs.

‎Only the winner of this mini-tournament will move one step closer to the 2026 World Cup, with Africa allotted two playoff spots.
