Serie A Weekend Roundup: Inter Go Top, Napoli Edge Juventus, And Roma Stumble
Serie A delivered a thrilling weekend packed with dominant displays, managerial reunions, dramatic red cards, and significant shifts in the table.
From Inter Milan’s four-goal statement to Napoli’s emotional win over Juventus, here’s the full story of an eventful round.
Inter Milan Go Top With 4-0 Thrashing of Como
Inter Milan produced one of their most convincing performances of the season with a 4-0 victory over big-spending Como at the San Siro. Lautaro Martínez, Marcus Thuram, Hakan Çalhanoğlu, and Carlos Augusto all found the net, showcasing Inter’s attacking fluidity and depth.
The win moved Inter two points above AC Milan and Napoli, both of whom still had matches to play.
Como, despite their ambitious project and heavy investment over the summer, remained sixth after being outclassed in every department.
Sassuolo Fight Back to Beat Fiorentina
Sassuolo earned a vital 3-1 comeback win over a struggling Fiorentina side. Cristian Volpato, Tarik Muharemović, and Ismaël Koné overturned an early deficit to send the Viola deeper into crisis.
Fiorentina now find themselves 25 points worse than at this stage last year, and despite switching managers, from Stefano Pioli to Paolo Vanoli, the decline continues.
Hellas Verona Claim First Win of the Season
Hellas Verona shocked Atalanta with a 3-1 victory, securing their first win of the campaign. The result provides much-needed hope for a team that has spent most of the season entrenched in the relegation zone.
Roma Slip in Sardinia After Çelik Red Card
Roma’s title push suffered a setback with a 1-0 loss at Cagliari, a match shaped by a decisive moment early in the second half. Four minutes after the restart, Zeki Çelik brought down Michael Folorunsho near the penalty area.
The referee initially awarded a penalty, but after reviewing the incident, determined the foul occurred just outside the box. The spot kick was withdrawn, but Çelik was issued a straight red card for denying a clear scoring opportunity.
Despite several excellent saves from goalkeeper Mile Svilar, Roma eventually conceded in the 82nd minute when Gianluca Gaetano was left unmarked to chest down a corner and fire in off the inside of the post.
The result marked Cagliari’s first victory since September and moved them four points clear of the relegation zone.
Roma remained in fourth place, one point behind both Napoli and AC Milan, and three behind Inter.
Lazio and Bologna Share the Points
Bologna missed a chance to close the gap on Roma after drawing 1-1 with Lazio. Gustav Isaksen opened the scoring for Lazio before Jens Odgaard equalised only two minutes later.
The match grew even more challenging for Lazio when Mario Gila was sent off for dissent in the 79th minute. Earlier in the day, Cremonese enjoyed a strong 2-0 win over Lecce.
Napoli Beat Juventus
The headline clash of the weekend saw Napoli defeat Juventus 2-1 in an emotionally charged encounter featuring two managers facing their former clubs. Luciano Spalletti returned to Napoli for the first time since leading them to the 2023 Scudetto, now in charge of Juventus.
On the opposite bench, Napoli coach Antonio Conte faced the club where he won multiple league titles as a manager and spent 13 years as a player.
The match began brightly for Napoli as David Neres broke free down the right and squared for Rasmus Højlund to tap in within seven minutes.
Juventus found their way back into the contest through Kenan Yıldız in the 59th minute, as he combined with Weston McKennie before driving a low shot into the far corner.
However, Napoli regained control late in the match. Miscommunication in the Juventus defence involving McKennie allowed Napoli to seize the moment, with Højlund striking again in the 78th minute to secure the win.
The result lifted Napoli back to the top of the Serie A table, one point above Inter and three ahead of AC Milan, who still had their fixture against Torino to play.
