Arsenal Secures Key Defender William Saliba On New Long-Term Contract
Arsenal have secured a new five-year deal with centre-back William Saliba, who is 24 years old. The agreement is set to be formalized in the next few days.
Sportxparte previously reported in May that Arsenal had begun negotiations to keep Saliba beyond June 2027, when his current contract runs out.
Saliba had been the subject of interest from Real Madrid, but said in March he was happy at Arsenal and wanted to win trophies with the north London club. Arsenal’s last piece of silverware was the FA Cup they won in 2020.
Asked whether he will sign a new contract in July, the Frenchman said, “Yes, hopefully of course, there is nothing now, but there is a good conversation with my agent and the club. Let’s see.”
William Saliba has been central to Arsenal’s success in maintaining the Premier League’s best defensive record over the past two seasons.
Last season, he featured in 51 matches across all competitions. His consistency helped Mikel Arteta’s side secure a third straight second-place league finish and advance to the Champions League semi-finals.
Saliba signed for Arsenal from Ligue 1 side Saint-Etienne in 2019, before spending consecutive seasons on loan back in the French top-flight with Nice and Marseille.
The French international is the newest Arsenal player to pledge his future to the club. His defensive partner, Gabriel, extended his contract in June.
More recently, Leandro Trossard and academy products Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly have also agreed new deals.
