Ligue 1 Roundup: Marseille Responds As UCL Race Tightens

Published

on

The latest round of Ligue 1 fixtures delivered sharp contrasts across the table, from commanding performances in the race for Europe to damaging setbacks for sides chasing momentum.

‎While Marseille strengthened its position near the top. Monaco suffered a heavy and unexpected defeat, and the battle for Champions League places intensified further.

‎Marseille vs Metz

‎At the Vélodrome, Marseille delivered a composed and efficient 3–1 victory over Metz, reclaiming third place in the process.

‎Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang set the tone in the first half, finishing with confidence to give the hosts an early advantage. Marseille maintained control after the break, with Igor Paixão doubling the lead after linking up effectively with Mason Greenwood.

‎Metz briefly threatened a comeback when Giorgi Tsitaishvili pulled one back. But Marseille’s superiority remained clear. Substitute Hamed Junior Traorè added a late third in stoppage time.

‎Paris FC vs Monaco

‎Monaco’s impressive 10-match unbeaten run came to a dramatic end with a 4–1 loss against Paris FC. A result that could have significant implications for their European ambitions.

‎The hosts raced into a commanding lead, scoring three times within the opening 21 minutes. Jonathan Ikoné was central to the early onslaught, scoring twice.

‎While veteran striker Ciro Immobile added another to leave Monaco stunned.

‎Folarin Balogun continued his excellent scoring form by pulling one back before halftime. It extended his run to seven consecutive league matches with a goal.

‎However, any hopes of a comeback faded as Luca Koleosho struck in the second half to restore Paris FC’s dominance.

‎The match also marked the return of Paul Pogba, who received a warm reception from the home crowd.

‎Auxerre vs Nantes

‎At the bottom of the table, Nantes slipped further into danger following a goalless draw with Auxerre.

‎The result leaves Nantes in 17th place, five points behind Auxerre, who occupy the relegation playoff position. Despite having a game in hand.

‎Nantes face a daunting fixture against league leaders Paris Saint-Germain, making their path to survival increasingly uncertain.

‎For a club with such a rich history, the threat of relegation is becoming all too real once again.

‎Rennes vs Angers

‎Rennes strengthened their push for a Champions League place with a 2–1 win over Angers.

‎An early own goal gave Rennes the lead before Mousa Al-Tamari doubled the advantage with a well-taken finish after latching onto a long ball. Angers responded through young forward Peter Prosper, but Rennes held firm to secure three valuable points.

‎The win moves Rennes into fifth place, keeping them firmly in contention in an increasingly competitive race for European qualification.

‎Toulouse vs Lille

‎Lille produced one of the standout performances of the weekend with a commanding 4–0 win over Toulouse.

‎Thomas Meunier opened the scoring before the game turned decisively following the dismissal of defender Mark McKenzie early in the second half. Lille capitalised fully on their numerical advantage, controlling possession and creating chances at will.

‎Romain Perraud and Matias Fernandez-Pardo extended the lead before Olivier Giroud added a late penalty to complete a comprehensive victory. The result lifts Lille into third place, strengthening their position in the race for automatic Champions League qualification.

‎Lyon vs Lorient

‎Lyon ended a frustrating nine-game winless run with a 2–0 victory over Lorient.

‎Much of the focus was on teenage forward Endrick, who responded positively after being dropped by coach Paulo Fonseca. The Brazilian played a key role in both goals, first delivering a precise cross for Roman Yaremchuk to score. Then, creating the second opportunity that Corentin Tolisso converted.

‎Lyon also relied on goalkeeper Dominik Greif, whose crucial save in first-half stoppage time preserved their advantage. The result lifts Lyon into fifth place, just one point behind Marseille, and reignites their hopes of European qualification.

‎Nice vs Le Havre

‎Nice were held to a 1–1 draw by Le Havre, leaving both sides hovering uncomfortably above the relegation zone.

‎Neither team was able to assert full control, and the result does little to ease the pressure as the season enters its decisive phase.

‎PSG vs Lens

‎The headline fixture between Paris Saint-Germain and Lens was postponed to allow PSG additional preparation time for their Champions League quarterfinal against Liverpool.

‎PSG’s request was granted despite opposition from Lens, and the match has been rescheduled for May 13.

‎The decision highlights the league’s prioritisation of European competition. Particularly as PSG look to build on their 2–0 first-leg advantage.
