UCL QF Roundup: Atletico Survive Barca Fightback As PSG Cruise Past Liverpool
The first two semi-final places in the 2025–26 UEFA Champions League were confirmed on Tuesday night.
As Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain navigated contrasting second-leg challenges to book their spots in the last four.
Atletico Madrid Edge Barcelona in a Dramatic Spanish Clash
Holding a 2–0 advantage from the first leg at Camp Nou. Atletico Madrid survived a furious comeback effort from rivals Barcelona, progressing 3–2 on aggregate despite losing 2–1 on the night.
The result preserves Diego Simeone’s remarkable record in Champions League quarter-finals against Barcelona, having previously eliminated them in 2013–14 and 2015–16.
A disastrous start from Atletico ignited the contest. A loose touch from Clément Lenglet gifted possession to Lamine Yamal, who struck inside four minutes to halve the aggregate deficit.
Barcelona then produced the moment they needed to level the tie. Ferran Torres drilled an emphatic finish into the top corner.
For a fleeting moment, the momentum seemed fully in the Catalans’ favour.
Their joy was short-lived. Ademola Lookman restored Atletico’s aggregate lead almost immediately, converting a swift response that steadied the hosts.
The second half brought more drama. Torres thought he had made it 2–1 on the night, only for VAR to rule him offside.
Minutes later, Barcelona’s task became even harder when Eric García was sent off in the 79th minute for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Chances flowed at both ends as Barcelona pushed desperately for a third goal that would overturn the tie. But Atletico defended resolutely to secure their first Champions League semi-final appearance since 2017.
They will face the winner of the quarter-final between Sporting Lisbon and Arsenal, with that duel set to be settled on Wednesday.
PSG Dominate Liverpool to Keep Their European Crown in Sight
On a night when Anfield demanded a comeback. Paris Saint-Germain delivered a statement of authority, defeating Liverpool 2–0 to complete a comprehensive 4–0 aggregate triumph.
The reigning European champions, led by Luis Enrique, now move within two matches of returning to the Champions League final after securing the trophy for the first time last season.
Ballon d’Or holder Ousmane Dembélé proved the game’s outstanding performer. He scored both goals in the second leg and punished Liverpool’s wastefulness during their brightest spell of the match.
After withstanding heavy pressure early in the second half, PSG struck clinically on the counter. Dembélé cut inside onto his left foot at the edge of the box before curling beyond Giorgi Mamardashvili into the bottom corner.
Liverpool continued to push but were repeatedly repelled by a disciplined PSG defence marshalled in front of goalkeeper Matvey Safonov.
Any lingering hope for the Reds evaporated when Bradley Barcola surged down the flank. And he supplied a precise low delivery that Dembélé swept home for his second of the night.
The defeat deepens the pressure on Arne Slot, whose Liverpool side has now lost four of their last five across all competitions.
PSG will face the winner of Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich a clash to be decided on Wednesday.
