Liverpool Battles Back To Secure Dramatic Draw Against Fulham
Liverpool managed to secure a point against Fulham at Anfield, despite being reduced to 10 men.
Diogo Jota’s late equalizer salvaged a hard-fought draw for the hosts, extending their unbeaten head-to-head record against Fulham to seven games (W4, D3).
A Chaotic First Half
The game kicked off with notable intensity, and within the first minute, Andrew Robertson was left flattened after a heavy tackle from Fulham’s Issa Diop. This set the tone for a frantic first half, which saw four Fulham players booked in the opening 45 minutes.
Fulham struck first after just 10 minutes. Antonee Robinson, making an impressive overlapping run, delivered a cross to the back post where Andreas Pereira acrobatically turned it into the net.
The ball took a slight deflection off Robertson, further complicating the already challenging afternoon for the Scotsman.
Things took a turn for the worse for Liverpool when Robertson was shown a red card just 16 minutes into the match. His dismissal was self-inflicted; a miscontrolled cross-field pass allowed Harry Wilson to intercept and sprint towards goal, forcing the referee to show the red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity.
With Liverpool now down to 10 men, the dynamics of the game shifted dramatically.
However, neither team settled into their new roles, with Liverpool struggling to mount a coherent counterattack and Fulham unable to capitalize fully on their advantage.
Liverpool’s Determination Shines
Despite the setback of losing their left-back so early, Liverpool came out with renewed energy after the half-time break. Just two minutes into the second half, they equalized through Cody Gakpo.
Mohamed Salah delivered a teasing cross into the box, and Gakpo, alert to the opportunity, ghosted in to nod the ball home from close range.
With the match finely poised and both teams seeking a winning goal, the action intensified. Salah had a chance to put Liverpool ahead but fired wide after a swift counterattack following a Fulham corner kick.
As the game swung end-to-end, it was clear both sides were determined to leave Anfield with all three points.
Fulham Regains the Lead
Fulham wasn’t deterred, and they managed to re-establish their lead in the 68th minute. Alex Iwobi picked out Robinson, who was again making headway down the left flank.
His pullback was scuffed home by substitute Rodrigo Muniz, sending the visiting fans into raptures. With the score at 2-1, it seemed like Fulham might hold on for a crucial away victory, but Liverpool had other ideas.
Jota’s Late Heroics
In the dying minutes, Liverpool demonstrated fighting spirit. Diogo Jota, who had been relatively quiet, found himself in a pocket of space.
After a clever turn, he unleashed a powerful low drive that found the back of the net, leveling the score at 2-2.
Despite being a man down, Liverpool continued to push forward. Virgil van Dijk, usually a rock in defense, found himself playing as a makeshift center forward, embodying the team’s determination.
In the final moments, Alisson was called into action, making a critical save from an effort by Adama Traoré, ensuring the game ended in a draw.
Looking Ahead
Liverpool showed immense character to come from behind twice in a match where they were outnumbered. Jota’s late equalizer is a testament to the never-say-die attitude that has become synonymous with the side.
For Fulham, there are positives to take away especially their ability to exploit the extra man advantage.
However, they will rue missed opportunities that could have seen them take all three points back to London.
