Maguire Banned As Man Utd Face Defensive Crisis Ahead Of Chelsea Clash
Harry Maguire will miss Manchester United’s crucial trip to Chelsea after the Football Association upheld a misconduct charge against the defender.
The decision adds further pressure on United heading into a high-stakes Premier League encounter that could significantly impact their push for Champions League qualification.
FA Confirms Punishment
Maguire has been handed a one-match suspension along with a £30,000 fine. Following an incident involving the fourth official Matt Donohue. The charge stems from his reaction after being sent off during United’s clash with AFC Bournemouth.
The England international was dismissed by referee Stuart Attwell for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity to Evanilson. That red card already ruled him out of United’s 2-1 defeat to Leeds United.
And the upheld charge now extends his absence.
The FA formally charged Maguire on April 1, “It is alleged that the defender acted in an improper manner and abusive and insulting words and behaviour towards the fourth official following his dismissal.”
In its written reasons, the FA detailed Donohue’s account of the exchange, claiming Maguire approached him and said, “You’re a joke. You’re all a f—ing joke.”
Maguire disputed that version, maintaining in his statement that he said, “something along the lines of ‘it is a f—ing joke’” and insisting he was, “Certain,” he did not call any match official a joke.
Support for Maguire’s version came from teammate Joshua Zirkzee, who testified that he was, “confident that Harry (Maguire) did not call the Fourth Official or any other Match Official a joke”.
Zirkzee was positioned nearby on the touchline at the time, warming up and observing the exchange.
Despite the conflicting testimonies, the FA ruled the charge proven.
Defensive Problems Mount for United
Maguire’s suspension is only part of a growing defensive headache for United. And Lisandro Martínez is also expected to be unavailable after his red card against Leeds.
The Argentine defender was sent off following VAR intervention from John Brooks, who advised referee Paul Tierney to review a hair-pulling incident involving Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
United is appealing the decision. Where they arguing that Martínez did not use excessive force and was attempting to challenge for the ball.
However, the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMO) remains confident that the laws were correctly applied.
Hair-Pulling Rule Under the Spotlight
The incident has reignited focus on how hair-pulling is judged under current regulations. Referees were briefed before the season that such actions would be treated as violent conduct.
Howard Webb explained the policy, “For some years now, actions where players have pulled an opponent’s hair are deemed as violent conduct.
“It is in the guidance we give to clubs before the season starts. The book that the Premier League produces states that grabbing someone’s hair with force is deemed as violent conduct and a player will be sent off.”
A similar incident earlier in the season. Which saw Michael Keane who was penalised for pulling the braided hair of Tolu Arokodare. This happened during a match between Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Youthful Defence Likely at Stamford Bridge
With both Maguire and Martínez likely unavailable. Head coach Michael Carrick could be forced into deploying an inexperienced centre-back pairing.
Teenagers Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are expected to start, as Matthijs de Ligt continues his recovery from a back injury.
High Stakes in the Top-Four Race
United enter the match aiming to strengthen their grip on a Champions League spot. Currently sitting third, a victory over sixth-placed Chelsea would create valuable breathing room in the standings.
However, defeat would cut the gap between the sides to just four points, intensifying the race for European qualification.
