Manchester United Equals Miserable Club Record After Newcastle Defeat

In December 2024, Manchester United experienced its worst defensive performance on record.

Following a promising start to the Ruben Amorim era, Manchester United’s fortunes have dramatically declined in recent weeks.

The team suffered a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Monday, marking their fourth consecutive loss across all competitions and their fifth defeat in the last six Premier League matches.

During their nine matches in December across all competitions, Manchester United conceded a total of 18 goals. This marks the highest number of goals the Red Devils have allowed in a single month in recorded history, equaling their dismal record from March 1964.

Following the match, Amorim acknowledged that the team’s continued struggles had put them in a relegation battle.

Further compounding United’s misery, the loss to Newcastle at Old Trafford marked the third straight league defeat at home. It was the first time United had been on such a run since 1979, while it was also the first time United had failed to score in three straight losses for the first time in nine years.

Amorim is already facing significant pressure due to his inability to make an impact while trying to implement the 3-4-2-1 formation, which he successfully utilized at his former club, Sporting CP.

Before the match, he reaffirmed his commitment to his vision and stated that he would not abandon his ideas.

“I was hired because of that idea, and in these difficult moments if you change your mind, it is the end for any coach,” he said.

Now, however, Amorim appears to have left the door open to a potential tweak to his preferred system.

“It is a choice that everyone has to make in football,” he said after the loss to Newcastle. “If I think this is the best thing for the team, I will continue to pass my message.”
