Southampton have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale from Arsenal.

Ramsdale spent a significant portion of the last season on the Arsenal bench, as manager Mikel Arteta made the unexpected choice to replace him with David Raya.

Raya’s loan was subsequently converted to a permanent deal following a standout season in which he won the Golden Glove.

As such, Ramsdale was limited to only 11 appearances across all competitions, prompting his move away.

A number of clubs expressed an interest in signing Ramsdale but it is Southampton who have won the race for his signature, parting with around £25m to get the deal done.

“I’m delighted,” Ramsdale said after making the move. “The way the manager wants to play, the way he was when I spoke to him, he was just full of so much enthusiasm. I’d never met him before, but he made me feel about eight feet tall, which is just what you want.

“Coming back down to the south coast as well for me and my family, it would be an easier transition than most, so I feel like I can hit the ground running.

“I’m looking forward to this year, just getting back to what I do best and having a big smile on my face while doing it here.”

Arteta added, “Aaron has been a top professional since joining in 2021 and has made many contributions during his time with us.

“We thank Aaron for everything he gave to Arsenal, and we wish him and his family the best of health, success, and happiness in his new opportunity with Southampton.”

Those best wishes were also shared by sporting director Edu.

“We are pleased to have reached a very positive transfer completion with Southampton and Aaron leaves us with our best wishes,” Edu said. “We thank Aaron for his performances for the club since joining us three years ago, and we wish him and his family well in their new chapter.”
