Serie A Roundup: Inter Close In As Napoli Collapses And Milan Recovers
The latest round of Serie A fixtures delivered significant movement at both ends of the table, with Inter Milan edging closer to sealing the Scudetto.
Napoli is suffering a damaging home defeat, and AC Milan is reclaiming second place.
Inter Take a Massive Leap Toward the Title
Inter Milan now stands on the brink of clinching the Serie A crown after Napoli’s shock 2-0 defeat at home to Lazio.
Inter’s win over Cagliari on Friday, combined with results elsewhere, has created the perfect scenario for a potential early title celebration next weekend.
Inter can mathematically secure the league if it beats Torino next Sunday. Both Napoli and AC Milan failed to win their respective matches. With a commanding 12-point lead over Napoli and a 15-point gap on Milan.
The Nerazzurri look almost untouchable with just five rounds remaining.
Napoli Jeered Off the Pitch After Lazio Dominance
Napoli’s collapse at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona brought loud jeers from their supporters. They watched their team suffer its first home league loss of the season.
Lazio struck early through Matteo Cancellieri, who converted a sharp pullback after fine work from Kenneth Taylor on the left flank.
Lazio’s aggressive approach repeatedly unsettled Napoli’s defence. The visitors should have doubled their lead in the 31st minute after Tijjani Noslin was brought down in the area by Stanislav Lobotka.
However, penalty specialist Vanja Milinković-Savić kept Mattia Zaccagni’s effort out, and the winger blasted the rebound over the bar.
Their persistence eventually paid off. In the 57th minute, Nuno Tavares surged into the box before a loose touch from Cancellieri fell kindly to Toma Bašić, who buried Lazio’s second goal.
Napoli’s title bid is now effectively over, and even their hold on second place has been surrendered to Milan.
Gasperini Faces His Past as Roma and Atalanta Share Points
In Rome, Gian Piero Gasperini faced his former club, Atalanta. But the emotionally charged reunion ended in a 1-1 draw that benefited neither side in the Champions League race.
Gasperini already under pressure after a tense public disagreement with director Claudio Ranieri spoke tearfully about his nine years in Bergamo ahead of the match.
Atalanta struck first through Nikola Krstović, but Mario Hermoso levelled just before halftime with a stunning volley. Hermoso nearly won it late on, only for his header to crash off the top of the crossbar.
Roma remain two points behind fourth-placed Juventus, while Atalanta sit a further four points back.
Parma All But Safe After Elphege’s Breakthrough Goal
Parma moved a giant step closer to guaranteeing their Serie A status thanks to a 1-0 win away at Udinese.
The hero was January signing Nesta Elphege, who scored his first top-flight goal just six minutes after coming on at halftime. A turn-and-spin finish into the bottom corner secured the win and moved Parma 12 points clear of the relegation zone.
Milan Bounce Back and Reclaim Second Place
After back-to-back defeats, AC Milan produced a composed performance to beat last-placed Hellas Verona 1-0. The victory lifted Milan back into second place eight points ahead of fifth-placed Como and safely in the Champions League zone.
The decisive moment came in the 41st minute when Adrien Rabiot dominated play from midfield, initiated the attack, linked with Rafael Leão, and finished clinically into the bottom corner.
Rabiot was easily the standout player of the first half.
Defender Matteo Gabbia is returning from two months out. Thought he had doubled Milan’s advantage in the 74th minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside in the buildup.
He later produced a vital defensive intervention to deny Verona a clear scoring opportunity. Verona now sit 10 points from safety, staring relegation in the face.
Cremonese in Trouble After Stalemate
Cremonese remain winless at home since early December after being held to a 0-0 draw by Torino. The point leaves them dangerously close to the drop zone just one point above 18th-placed Lecce, which still has a match to play against Fiorentina.
Pisa Drop Points as Genoa Fight Back
Elsewhere, Pisa let an early lead slip in a 2-1 defeat to Genoa, coached by Daniele De Rossi.
The comeback victory pushed Genoa 12 points clear of the relegation line. While Pisa remains locked level with Verona in a precarious position near the bottom of the table.
