Aitana Bonmati has won The Best FIFA Women’s Player award for the second year in a row, triumphing in 2024 after an inspirational 12 months.

The Barcelona midfielder has been a dominant force in women’s football for years and has now achieved a remarkable double-double by winning both The Best FIFA Women’s Player award and the Ballon d’Or Féminin.

She claimed the latter for the second time in October, following a decisive victory.

Bonmati enjoyed a special year with Barcelona, claiming the quadruple after winning the Champions League, Copa de la Reina, Supercopa de Espana, and Liga F.

The Spaniard also won the 2023/24 UEFA Nations League with her country, scoring in the final during a 2-0 win over France.

The 26-year-old scored 26 goals and provided 20 assists for both club and country during the 2023/24 season, and she has maintained her exceptional form into the 2024/25 season, already contributing seven goals and five assists.

Bonmati scored the crucial opener in the 2023/24 Champions League final, too. Her strike in the 63rd minute helped Barcelona to their 2-0 victory over Lyon as they retained their status as European champions for another year.

The Best FIFA Women’s Player award has been presented since 2016 and has been won by seven different players, including Bonmatí.

Before her first victory in 2023, Barcelona teammate Alexia Putellas had won the award twice in a row.

There were 16 nominees in total for the accolade and Bonmati fought off competition from a number of her club and international teammates.

Caroline Graham Hansen, Keira Walsh, Ona Batlle, and Salma Parallels are among the current Barcelona players who received nominations.

Additionally, Chelsea’s Lucy Bronze and Arsenal’s Mariona Caldentey both played for the Catalan club during the 2023/24 season before leaving in the summer.
