Foden Agrees New Man City Deal Despite Form And Minutes Concerns

Phil Foden has agreed in principle to a new four-year contract with Manchester City, a deal that is expected to keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2030.

‎While the paperwork is still being finalised, there is no expectation of complications. The club views the agreement as a major step in securing the long-term future of one of its most important academy graduates.

‎Contract Extension Amid Reduced Game Time

‎Foden’s current contract is due to expire in the summer of 2027. But City have moved early to extend his stay, adding a further four years with an additional 12-month option.

‎The deal arrives at a curious moment for the England international, whose prominence in the first team has waned over recent months.

‎Under Pep Guardiola, Foden has slipped down the pecking order. His last Premier League start came in the 2-2 home draw with Nottingham Forest on March 4.

‎And since then he has largely been used from the bench. Even Monday night’s 3-3 draw with Everton saw him introduced only as a late substitute.

‎This downturn in minutes has coincided with a noticeable dip in form. Just two seasons ago, Foden was central to City’s 2023-24 title triumph and collected both the Football Writers’ Association and Professional Footballers’ Association Player of the Year awards confirmation of his elite standing in English football.

‎His current struggles, therefore, mark a significant shift in trajectory.

‎City’s Belief vs. Foden’s Challenge

‎Despite the reduced game time, Guardiola has consistently expressed confidence that Foden will rediscover his best level. And maintaining that the midfielder remains “undroppable” when at full sharpness.

‎The new contract reflects the City’s long-term belief in him and reiterates their stance that he remains core to the club’s project.

‎Yet it also arrives at a time when speculation had begun to grow around the possibility of a summer exit. Reports from Sky Sports and BBC both confirmed that Foden had attracted interest from clubs abroad.

‎Although City were never inclined to entertain offers.

‎England Selection Now Uncertain

‎One major subplot concerns Foden’s international future. With the World Cup approaching, his lack of regular minutes could impact his chances of making the squad under Thomas Tuchel, who now leads the national team.
