Antoine Griezmann is going into international retirement, the Frenchman announced via his own Instagram on Monday morning, calling it a day after 137 international matches.

Griezmann made his debut for France’s national team over a decade ago at the age of 22 in a friendly against the Dutch national team and reached a total of 137 international appearances.

The Atlético Madrid forward’s recent appearances for France took place during this month’s Nations League matches, following his involvement in the team’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 semifinal.

“It is with a heart full of memories that I close this chapter of my life,” Griezmann posted on social media. “Thank you for this magnificent, tricolor adventure, and see you soon.”

“Today, with profound emotion, I announce my retirement as a France national team player,” Griezmann said. “After ten incredible years marked by challenges, successes, and unforgettable moments, it’s time for me to turn the page and make room for the new generation.

“Wearing this shirt has been an honor and a privilege … I leave the France national team with a sense of pride and gratitude. I had the honor of representing our country and the chance to experience extraordinary moments, like becoming a world champion.

“I’ll continue to follow Les Bleus with passion. I’m convinced that the future is bright and I can’t wait to see the next generation shine.”

The attacker, who has spent his entire professional career in Spain, has won the World Cup and the Nations League with France, among other titles.

Antoine Griezmann’s appearance and goal for France

During the 2016 European Championship, where France was defeated in the final by Portugal, he emerged as a top scorer of the tournament, scoring a total of six goals.

Only two players have played more international matches for France in their careers than Griezmann. Olivier Giroud played the same number and, like Griezmann, recently announced his international retirement.

Furthermore, only Lilian Thuram (142) and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris (145) played more duels for the national team. Griezmann was, however, the only player from the top 10 still active for Les Bleus.

With his 44 goals, Griezmann is also fourth on the list of France’s all-time top scorers. Only captain Kylian Mbappe (48), Thierry Henry (51) and Giroud (57) accounted for more.

Griezmann will now focus entirely on club football. He still has a commitment until mid-2026 with Atletico Madrid.

He started for Atlético in their 1-1 derby draw with Real Madrid in La Liga on Sunday.

The forward has frequently said that he would like to end his club career playing in MLS.
