Inter Miami Names Stadium Stand After Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi will be immortalized at Inter Miami’s new stadium with a stand named in his honor.
The Major League Soccer club announced that the ‘Leo Messi Stand’ will celebrate the 38-year-old captain. This tribute breaks tradition, as such honors are usually reserved for retired legends of the sport.
”Traditionally, tributes look to the past. They are built on nostalgia. From memory. This one is different,” the club said in a statement on Friday.
”This one is born from the present. From what is happening right now. From what you feel every time Leo steps onto the pitch.”
The club is set to play its first game in the 26,700-seat stadium on April 4th when they host Austin FC.
Messi’s impact on Inter Miami so far
Since joining Inter Miami in 2023, Lionel Messi has led the club, co-owned by former England midfielder David Beckham, to three trophies the 2023 Leagues Cup, the 2024 Supporters’ Shield, and last year’s MLS Cup.
The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner also holds the club records for most goals (82) and assists (53) in just 94 appearances. Earlier this month, Messi scored his 900th career goal, becoming only the second player in elite men’s football to reach the milestone after long-time rival Cristiano Ronaldo.
His impact at Inter Miami has been immediate and historic, cementing his legacy in both MLS and global football.
