Steve Nicol Speaks On Liverpool’s Uninspiring Defense Amid Race For Titles
Former Liverpool player Steve Nicol has expressed concerns about Liverpool‘s title ambitions, suggesting that the team won’t clinch the Premier League or Champions League with Wataru Endo as the regular starting holding midfielder.
Endo, signed for £16 million in the summer, has shown promise for the Reds. However, questions lingered around the Japan international before his arrival at Anfield, leaving few well-versed on his abilities.
While Jurgen Klopp rates Endo highly, the midfielder has been overshadowed by other impressive signings like Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister. Nicol believes Endo might not effectively fill the void left by Fabinho after the Brazilian’s departure.
Nicol, speaking to ESPN, emphasized the need for Liverpool to swiftly bolster their midfield, particularly the defensive area, to sustain their position atop the Premier League standings.
“Endo does a job. But you’re not winning the Premier League or the Champions League with Endo as your defensive midfielder,” Nicol remarked, highlighting the need for an upgrade in that crucial position.
Liverpool’s recent match against Crystal Palace highlighted Endo’s struggles, with Palace relentless in pressuring him during the first half. Despite being fouled in a pivotal play that led to a penalty, Endo’s performance raised concerns about his suitability in that role.
Klopp’s decision to substitute Endo at halftime against Palace underscores potential issues in Liverpool’s midfield. While the club is known for cautious transfer decisions, Nicol speculates whether Endo’s display might influence their plans for the January transfer window.
Nicol’s analysis suggests Liverpool’s urgency to fortify their defensive midfield if they aim to solidify their position as favorites for major titles.
As the Reds navigate their campaign, the need for reinforcement in this pivotal position looms large, potentially shaping their pursuit of silverware in the near future.
