UEFA’s Kathryn Batte Aims To Aid Women’s Clubs With Technology Amid Chelsea’s VAR Outcry At Real Madrid
In a groundbreaking statement addressing the pressing need for technological support in women’s football, UEFA’s Kathryn Batte emphasized the imperative role of technology in elevating the Women’s Champions League to its deserved status as an elite competition.
“Today we stand at a turning point in women’s football.
The recent controversies surrounding critical decisions in matches underscore the necessity for technological aid, particularly Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology,” declared Batte during her keynote address at the UEFA Women’s Football Summit.
Highlighting the unfortunate incident during the Chelsea versus Real Madrid match, where a disallowed goal stirred chaos due to an offside call, Batte asserted, “The uproar following such incidents not only disrupts the integrity of the game but also exposes the undeniable need for VAR implementation in women’s football.”
Batte outlined the disparity existing among clubs, where financial constraints hinder the widespread use of VAR, creating an uneven playing field. “While thriving golf facilities such as Chelsea and Real Madrid may offset technological advancements, many other countries in Europe face financial difficulties, which perpetuates imbalances within the sport.
Moreover, she highlighted the infrastructural limitations in certain stadiums, impeding the effective utilization of VAR. “Infrastructure limitations are a major challenge. Some stadiums lack the facilities required to implement VAR, further widening the gap between clubs.
In her resounding call to action, Batte emphasized UEFA’s pivotal role in addressing these challenges. “UEFA’s intervention is not just necessary; it is imperative. We must bridge this gap by not only facilitating VAR implementation but also by championing the cause of female referees and ensuring equal resources across all levels of the game.”
“The Women’s Champions League deserves more than just technological advancements. It requires comprehensive support to flourish and uphold the values of fairness and integrity,” concluded Batte, urging stakeholders to rally behind the cause of women’s football.
