Barcelona’s Dani Olmo And Pau Víctor Granted Temporary Registration
Dani Olmo and Pau Víctor have received temporary playing registrations as Spain’s top sports court continues to review Barcelona’s case against La Liga and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).
The Consejo Superior de Deportes [CSD] has ruled that Olmo and Víctor should both be available for selection until there is a definitive ruling in the case.
Olmo and Víctor were both deregistered by La Liga on December 31 after Barcelona failed to meet a deadline to demonstrate their compliance with the league’s financial fair play (FFP) regulations.
LaLiga eventually confirmed Barça had shown they were able to fulfill certain FFP requirements on Jan. 3 and, therefore, had had their “spending cap extended.”
However, in a joint statement with the RFEF, La Liga added that players who have had their registrations canceled cannot be re-registered with a club for a second time in the same season.
Barcelona appealed that decision to the CSD, challenging the interpretation of the rule, and submitted a 52-page report to the court on Tuesday outlining their argument.
A final decision from the CSD could take up to three months, although sources do not anticipate it will take that long. In the meantime, the court has permitted both Olmo and Víctor to play for Barcelona, though this comes too late for them to participate in Wednesday’s Spanish Supercopa semifinal against Athletic Club.
If Barcelona wins, they will be eligible to play in Sunday’s final against either Real Madrid or Mallorca.
The duo both joined Barcelona permanently last summer but were registered temporarily under a rule that permits clubs to allocate up to 80% of the salary owed to an injured player, in this case, Andreas Christensen, towards substitutes.
