‎”The Team Needs to Score, Not You” Thierry Henry’s Verdict On Ronaldo Tells The Whole Story

Published

on

A few hours earlier in Kansas City, Lionel Messi had scored a hat-trick and equalled the all-time World Cup goals record.

‎In Houston, Cristiano Ronaldo touched the ball 25 times, registered three shots none on target, and was publicly criticised on live television by Thierry Henry and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

‎Portugal were held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo.

‎And for Ronaldo, the evening got worse long after the final whistle.

‎The 41-year-old became only the third player in football history to appear at six FIFA World Cups, joining Messi and Guillermo Ochoa in an exclusive club. It should have been a night of celebration.

‎Instead, it became a night dominated by questions about Portugal’s attacking structure, Ronaldo’s role within it, and a DR Congo side that refused to be overawed by the occasion.

‎DR Congo’s Greatest Night

‎Portugal could hardly have wished for a better start.

‎Just six minutes into the contest, Joao Neves drifted into space inside the penalty area and met Pedro Neto’s excellent cross with a well-directed header. The Portuguese supporters inside Houston’s stadium erupted.

‎The favourites were ahead and the script appeared to be unfolding perfectly.

‎For a brief period, Portugal controlled possession comfortably. Yet what followed was a recurring problem that has haunted Roberto Martinez’s side in major tournaments.

‎Instead of building on their lead, they slowed the game down.

‎The intensity dropped. The urgency disappeared. Portugal dominated the ball without truly threatening and allowed DR Congo to grow into the contest.

‎The Leopards, making their first World Cup appearance since 1974, showed admirable composure.

‎Rather than retreating into a defensive shell, they continued searching for opportunities through the pace of Yoane Wissa and the delivery of Arthur Masuaku.

‎Their reward arrived in first-half stoppage time.

‎Masuaku whipped a dangerous ball into the area and Wissa rose highest to power a header beyond Diogo Costa. The equaliser sparked scenes of celebration among the Congolese players.

‎This was more than a goal. It was DR Congo’s first-ever point in World Cup history.

Fifty-two years after their only previous appearance at the tournament. The Leopards had announced their return on the biggest stage by frustrating one of Europe’s traditional powers.

‎Portugal never recovered fully. Despite enjoying the majority of possession, they finished the match with only one shot on target.

‎Against a side returning after half a century away from the competition, it was a disappointing return for a nation widely considered capable of challenging for the trophy.

‎Portugal vs DR Congo: Wissa Delivered

forward Yoane Wissa (#20) scored a historic equalizer for the DR Congo national football team in their 1-1 draw against Portugal at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

‎Before the tournament began, much of the discussion around DR Congo focused on their defensive organisation and emotional return to the World Cup.

‎But Yoane Wissa represented their most obvious attacking threat.

‎The Newcastle United forward once again demonstrated why he has become such an important figure for Sebastien Desabre’s side.

‎His movement constantly unsettled Portugal’s defenders. His pace stretched the game whenever DR Congo transitioned from defence to attack.

‎Most importantly, he delivered when his team needed him most.

‎The equalising goal was not simply a finish.

‎It was a statement that DR Congo belong at this tournament.

‎For years African nations have battled perceptions that they arrive at World Cups merely to participate. Wissa’s goal challenged that narrative directly.

‎Portugal expected victory. DR Congo expected to compete.

‎The difference in mentality became increasingly apparent as the game progressed.

‎For African football, the result was another encouraging sign that the continent’s representatives are capable of matching elite opposition in the expanded 48-team tournament.

Portugal vs DR Congo: ‎Ronaldo’s Night in Numbers

‎Statistics do not always tell the entire story.

‎In Ronaldo’s case, they paint a difficult picture.

  • 25 touches
  • ‎3 shots
  • ‎0 shots on target
  • ‎0.46 expected goals
  • ‎1 forward carry
  • ‎0 goals

‎For a player chasing his 1,000th career goal, it was a frustrating evening.

‎Ronaldo’s first meaningful opportunity arrived in the 69th minute when he failed to direct a cross on target.

‎The chance summed up his night. The timing was slightly off. The movement lacked its former explosiveness. The margins that once worked in his favour increasingly worked against him.

‎Age does not diminish greatness. But it does change the way greatness must operate.

‎At 41, Ronaldo is no longer the player who can beat defenders repeatedly through pace or create opportunities entirely on his own. He depends more heavily on service, intelligent movement and teammates capable of supplying quality deliveries into dangerous areas.

‎Against DR Congo, those conditions rarely existed. The contrast with Messi’s performance earlier in the day inevitably dominated discussions after the final whistle.

‎While Messi answered every question with a hat-trick against Algeria, Ronaldo left Houston facing fresh scrutiny.

‎”The Team Needs to Score, Not You” Henry’s Verdict

Fox Sports personalities Rebecca Lowe, Thierry Henry, Zlatan Ibrahimović, and Alexi Lalas are providing commentary at SoFi Stadium for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

‎The most talked-about moment of the evening did not happen on the pitch.

‎It happened in the television studio afterwards. Speaking on FOX alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Thierry Henry analysed a second-half attacking sequence involving Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes.

‎The Frenchman’s criticism was direct. “If you make that run here, you make the defender decide to crash the six-yard box. But because he wants to score, he goes into the path of Bruno Fernandes,” Henry explained.

‎Then came the line that immediately spread across social media.

‎”The team needs to score, not you.”

‎Henry’s analysis focused on Ronaldo’s movement.

‎Rather than dragging defenders away and creating space for teammates, he argued that Ronaldo’s positioning actually reduced Portugal’s attacking options.

‎Ibrahimovic agreed. “Normally, as a striker, you go from first post to second post to bring the defender with you to open the space for the guy behind. So, obviously you made the wrong choice here, Cristiano.”

‎These were not casual observers offering criticism.

‎They were two of the greatest forwards of their generation publicly dissecting Ronaldo’s decision-making during his sixth and likely final World Cup.

‎However, Henry also offered an important qualification. He acknowledged that Portugal’s teammates must do more to help Ronaldo.

‎”If you play with Cristiano Ronaldo, the other guys need to do a tiny bit more in terms of running in behind and trying to help him because we know what he is right now.

‎”He is not going to run into the channel. He is not going to stretch a team. You need to feed him in the box for him to score goals.”

‎It was a brutally honest assessment. Not necessarily of Ronaldo’s quality.

‎But of the reality of where he is at this stage of his career.

Portugal vs DR Congo: ‎The Elephant in the Room Goncalo Ramos

Portuguese professional striker Gonçalo Ramos.

‎Every difficult Ronaldo performance inevitably revives another debate.

‎Gonçalo Ramos. The striker famously replaced Ronaldo during Portugal’s 2022 World Cup knockout clash against Switzerland and responded with a remarkable hat-trick.

‎Many observers believe Ramos offers greater mobility, pressing intensity and movement than Ronaldo.

‎Against DR Congo, he again appeared from the bench while Ronaldo completed the full 90 minutes.

‎Martinez remains loyal to his captain. But as the tournament progresses, that decision will face increasing examination.

‎Portugal possess enough quality to advance from Group K.

‎Whether they can challenge for the trophy may depend on solving this dilemma.

‎Portugal DR Congo: What This Means for Group K

‎DR Congo’s draw significantly alters the complexion of Group K.

‎The Leopards now have genuine belief that qualification for the knockout stages is possible.

‎A point against Portugal was not widely expected. Yet it places them in a strong position ahead of upcoming fixtures.

‎Portugal, meanwhile, have already lost momentum. Matches against Uzbekistan and Colombia now carry greater pressure than anticipated.

‎For DR Congo, the dream continues. For Portugal, the questions are multiplying.

‎Portugal vs DR Congo: Verdict

‎DR Congo arrived at this World Cup carrying the weight of a 52-year absence.

‎They left Houston with their first-ever World Cup point

‎Yoane Wissa delivered on the biggest stage and the Leopards showed they are capable of competing with elite opposition.

‎Portugal, meanwhile, looked far from convincing. Ronaldo reached another historic milestone, but milestones do not win football matches.

‎Messi scored a hat-trick earlier in the day. Ronaldo failed to register a shot on target.

‎Then Thierry Henry delivered the line that defined the entire evening.

‎The team needs to score. Not you.
