The Bundesliga has solidified its position as one of Europe’s top football leagues, securing an impressive five spots in the prestigious UEFA Champions League for the upcoming season.

Borussia Dortmund’s 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain secured them an advantage in the Champions League and also ensured Germany’s second place in UEFA’s coefficient table, an achievement that will have a significant impact on European football.

The UEFA coefficient table rewards leagues with the best average performance across the three European competitions each season. As part of the remodel to expand the Champions League to a 36-team competition, two leagues are rewarded with extra places through the European Performance Spots. Serie A had already secured the first place, and with Dortmund’s victory Germany’s position was now indisputable, edging out the final contenders, England and France.

The Premier League entered the quarterfinals as favorites to claim the second spot, but a tough draw saw Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, and West Ham United all eliminated from the competition. Only Aston Villa remains active in the Europa Conference League.

Meanwhile, Germany’s rise to prominence was fueled by Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen’s victories over English clubs, Arsenal and West Ham respectively, to reach the semifinals.

If Dortmund wins the Champions League and finishes fifth in the Bundesliga, the league would have six teams in the Champions League, the top four, Dortmund as title holders, and the European Performance Spot. This would result in the Bundesliga forfeiting a Europa League spot, which would have been taken by Dortmund.
