Enrique Calls Semi-Final Vs Bayern ‘Best Of My Career
Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique described his team’s thrilling 5-4 victory over Bayern Munich as the best match he has ever coached.
The pulsating first-leg clash unfolded in Paris and delivered relentless drama from start to finish. Its nine-goal haul set a new record for the highest-scoring semifinal in Champions League history.
It also tied the mark for the second-most goals ever scored in a knockout game in the competition.
Enrique said the spectacle captured everything he wanted from his team on the biggest stage.
Luis Enrique comments
Luis Enrique’s coaching career has encompassed previous spells with Spain and Barcelona. He led a team spearheaded by Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, and Neymar to Champions League glory.
Nothing, though, he said matches up to what he witnessed at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday.
”I have never seen a match with this kind of intensity,” Luis Enrique said.
”This is not the time to point out flaws; we just need to congratulate everyone.
”We deserved to win, we deserved to draw and we deserved to lose today. It was a fantastic match. It has been, without a doubt, the best match I have ever been involved in as a coach.”
The second half turning point
PSG surged into a 5-2 advantage early in the second half, driven by two goals apiece from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Ousmane Dembélé at the Parc des Princes.
Bayern, however, refused to fold despite the three-goal deficit. Dayot Upamecano reignited their hopes with a powerful header from Joshua Kimmich’s free kick.
Luis Díaz then struck fiercely to cut the gap to a single goal.
The tie now heads to Munich next Wednesday with everything still in play.
Luis Enrique was exhausted just watching.
”I’m so tired, and I didn’t run a single kilometer,” he said.
”So I don’t know how the players are feeling.”
He does not expect any respite next week.
”I just asked my staff, ‘How many goals do you think we will need to win this match?’ They said, ‘Minimum three.’ Bayern Munich in their stadium are even stronger, but we will try and show the same mentality.”
Atlético Madrid will welcome Arsenal to Spain on Wednesday for the other semifinal first leg.
The winners of the two ties will then meet in the final, scheduled to take place in Budapest, Hungary, on May 30.
