UCL Semi-Final: PSG Face Bayern As Arsenal Visit Atletico
The road to European glory narrows to its most decisive stage this week as the UEFA Champions League semi-finals get underway, bringing together four clubs with contrasting histories.
But a shared ambition of reaching the final in Budapest.
PSG vs Bayern Munich
Perpetual domestic rulers and sporadic European conquerors collide on Tuesday night. The Parc des Princes will host PSG as they host Bayern Munich in a blockbuster semi-final first leg.
PSG have not quite replicated last season’s domestic dominance, but their European form has surged at the perfect moment.
Luis Enrique’s side is on a four-game winning streak in the Champions League, scoring goals against Chelsea and Liverpool combined. And reaching a third consecutive semi-final is an unprecedented feat for a French club.
Their composed two-legged victory over Liverpool highlighted their control and attacking efficiency. With Ousmane Dembele proving decisive.
Although a rotated side slipped to defeat against Lyon domestically. PSG quickly responded with convincing wins over Nantes and Angers to maintain a six-point lead at the top of Ligue 1.
Bayern, meanwhile, arrives in Paris as newly crowned Bundesliga champions. Their title arrival with a win over Stuttgart extended a strong run of form. But their focus is firmly on reclaiming European supremacy.
Since their 2020 triumph, Bayern have repeatedly fallen short in the latter stages. This includes four quarter-final exits and one semi-final defeat.
This season, however, they have rediscovered their cutting edge. Seven consecutive Champions League victories including a dramatic aggregate win over Real Madrid, show their credentials. While a high-scoring domestic win over Mainz extended their winning streak across all competitions.
Bayern also holds a recent psychological edge, having beaten PSG 2-1 in Paris earlier this season.
Team News
PSG have been handed timely boosts on the fitness front. Desire Doue and Nuno Mendes have recovered from injury concerns sustained against Liverpool and should be available.
Vitinha has returned to training after a heel issue. While Fabian Ruiz is pushing for a start after successfully returning from a knee injury.
Bayern will be without head coach Vincent Kompany on the touchline due to suspension. On the injury front, Serge Gnabry, Tom Bischof, Lennart Karl and Raphael Guerreiro are all unavailable.
However, Joshua Kimmich and Dayot Upamecano are expected to return after being rested, and Harry Kane enjoying a prolific campaign will lead the attack.
With confidence as he targets another Champions League scoring milestone.
Prediction: Paris Saint-Germain 2-2 Bayern Munich
Although recent meetings between these sides have not consistently produced goals at both ends. The attacking quality available suggests a more open contest.
PSG’s home advantage may give them an early edge, but Bayern’s current momentum and firepower should not be underestimated.
Atletico Madrid vs Arsenal
Wednesday’s semi-final first leg sees Atletico Madrid host Arsenal at the Estadio Metropolitano in a clash between two sides determined to make history by lifting their first Champions League trophy.
Atletico have reached their first semi-final since 2017 after eliminating Barcelona in a closely fought quarter-final. Under Diego Simeone, they have evolved into a more expansive attacking unit in Europe this season. They scored a record 34 goals in the competition.
They enter this fixture having scored in twelve consecutive matches and recently ended a domestic slump with victory over Athletic Bilbao.
Despite a mixed overall record against English opposition. Atletico’s home form in Europe remains formidable, particularly in knockout ties.
Arsenal, meanwhile, continues to break new ground under Mikel Arteta. Back-to-back semi-final appearances mark a significant milestone. And their unbeaten Champions League campaign reflects their consistency at the highest level.
Their narrow aggregate win over Sporting Lisbon demonstrated defensive resilience. While their league-phase dominance winning all eight matches, set the tone for their European run.
A recent Premier League victory over Newcastle has also restored momentum after a brief dip in form.
Arsenal’s record against Spanish sides is particularly encouraging. With seven consecutive Champions League victories, though past encounters with Atletico suggest this will be a far more complex challenge.
Team News
Atletico are dealing with several injury concerns. Pablo Barrios and Jose Gimenez are ruled out, while Ademola Lookman and David Hancko remain doubtful.
Julian Alvarez is also being monitored but could still face a doubtful attack alongside Antoine Griezmann or Alexander Sorloth. Midfield selection decisions remain open, with Marcos Llorente among the options for multiple roles.
Arsenal also has fitness issues to manage. Riccardo Calafiori may not recover in time.
Kai Havertz, Eberechi Eze and Martin Zubimendi will be assessed, although Eze is expected to be available. Bukayo Saka is in contention to start after his return, and Viktor Gyokeres could lead the line if Havertz is not fit.
Prediction: Atletico Madrid 1-1 Arsenal
First-leg encounters at this stage are often shaped by caution and structure. And this fixture is unlikely to deviate from that pattern.
Arsenal’s confidence from earlier success against Atletico will be a factor. But Simeone’s side is exceptionally difficult to overcome on home soil.
