La Liga Roundup: Barcelona Tightens Grip As Madrid Drops Points

Published

on

The La Liga title race, the European push, and the relegation battle all took decisive turns in a weekend marked by late goals and emotional tributes.

Bellerín’s Late Strike Damages Real Madrid’s Title Chase

‎Real Madrid’s fading hopes of chasing down Barcelona took another hit on Friday. Héctor Bellerín struck deep into stoppage time to secure a 1–1 draw for Real Betis.

‎Madrid looked on course for victory after taking a 17th-minute lead. Federico Valverde’s long-range effort forced goalkeeper Álvaro Valles into a parry. And Vinícius Júnior reacted sharply to tuck home from close range.

‎Jude Bellingham almost doubled the advantage shortly after. But Betis gradually grew into the game.

‎The hosts repeatedly tested Andriy Lunin, who produced a string of impressive saves to deny Cedric Bakambu, Antony, Cucho Hernández, and Natan throughout the match.

‎Despite Madrid regaining control after the break. Wastefulness in front of the goal highlighted by Kylian Mbappé blazing over and later seeing a goal ruled out for offside left the match lingering at 1–0.

‎The punishment came in the 93rd minute. Ferland Mendy lost the ball inside the box, and a fortunate ricochet fell to Bellerín, who drilled a low strike through a crowded penalty area.

‎Madrid’s failure to kill the game adds to mounting frustration. And with Barcelona pulling further ahead, hopes of stopping back-to-back trophyless seasons are dwindling.

Barcelona Move Closer to Back-to-Back Titles

‎Barcelona delivered a potentially decisive blow in the title race by securing a rare win away at Getafe only their second there since 2019. The 2–0 victory extends their lead over Real Madrid to 11 points with five matches remaining, including an upcoming Clásico at Camp Nou.

‎The emotional moment of the night came in the 45th minute when Fermín López opened the scoring. He celebrated by forming “304” with his fingers paying tribute to the injured Lamine Yamal, Barcelona’s leading scorer and creative spark this season.

‎Yamal is out for the remainder of the campaign with a muscle injury. But he aims to recover before representing Spain at the World Cup.

‎Fermín’s goal stemmed from a superb sequence Pau Cubarsí won a midfield duel, and Pedri González exploited the disorganized Getafe back line with a perfectly weighted through ball. Fermín finished clinically past David Soria.

‎With Getafe pushing for a late equaliser. Marcus Rashford coming off the bench raced onto a long ball from Robert Lewandowski, gliding more than half the pitch before burying the second.

‎Getafe remained in sixth place despite the defeat. And still fighting for a Europa League berth under the consistently overachieving José Bordalás.

Atlético Madrid Find Momentum Before Champions League Clash With Arsenal

‎In one of the weekend’s most important morale-boosting wins. Atlético Madrid snapped a dreadful run of seven losses in eight matches by beating Athletic Bilbao 3–2 at the Metropolitano.

‎Aitor Paredes put the visitors ahead. But Antoine Griezmann equalised early in the second half before Alexander Sørloth took control.

‎The Norwegian striker scored a brace to complete the comeback, though Gorka Guruzeta’s late goal ensured a tense finish.

‎The win stabilises Atlético ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League semifinal against Arsenal. And also keeps them fourth in La Liga with a ten-point buffer over Real Betis.

‎Crucially, Jan Oblak made his second straight start after returning from injury, offering Diego Simeone renewed confidence at the back.

Alavés, Valencia, and the Battle for Mid-Table

‎The middle of the La Liga table remains astonishingly tight only ten points separate sixth from 18th. That volatility was evident again as:

‎Alavés overturned a deficit to beat Mallorca 2–1 thanks to a quickfire double from Toni Martínez.

‎Valencia defeated Girona 2–1, boosting their outside hopes of a late push toward European qualification.

VAR Chaos and a Wild 3–3 Draw in Vallecas

‎One of the weekend’s most dramatic matches came at Vallecas Stadium, where Rayo Vallecano and Real Sociedad drew 3–3 in a game defined by a stunning VAR reversal.

‎Rayo thought they had equalised at 2–2 in the 69th minute through Pedro Díaz. But after review, the goal was cancelled and a penalty was awarded to Sociedad for a foul earlier in the buildup.

‎Mikel Oyarzabal converted to make it 3–1.

‎Rayo, furious but undeterred, mounted a late comeback with goals from Florian Lejeune in the 84th minute and Alemão nine minutes into stoppage time.

Sevilla Sinks Deeper Into Relegation Trouble

‎Sevilla’s disastrous season took another grim turn with a 2–1 loss to Osasuna. Neal Maupay had given Sevilla hope by scoring in the 69th minute. But Raúl García equalised, and Alejandro Catena scored a stoppage-time winner to plunge the visitors back into the relegation zone.

‎Sevilla now sit 18th one point behind Real Mallorca and face a brutally tight survival battle.
