Lookman Hits Double As Nigeria Beats Benin Republic
The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Benin Republic in their AFCON qualifier on Saturday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, avenging a 2-1 defeat suffered three months ago in a World Cup qualifier.
The Super Eagles’ persistent pressure finally yielded results just before halftime, with Ademola Lookman the score in the minute of stoppage.
Lookman maneuvered past defenders before curling a shot into the left, deceiving the Benin goalkeeper and putting his team ahead 1-0.
Victor Osimhen, who just signed for Galatasaray on loan from Napoli was introduced in the 72nd minute and made an immediate impact, doubling Nigeria’s lead in the 78th minute with a clinical finish after being set up by Wilfred Ndidi.
Lookman completed his brace in the 83rd minute, netting Nigeria’s third goal after a precise assist from Moses Simon.
The Super Eagles dominated possession with 61%, registering 14 goal attempts and five shots on target, three of which found the back of the net.
In contrast, the Benin Republic managed six goal attempts and three shots on target but failed to convert.
This victory keeps Nigeria in a strong position in their AFCON qualifying campaign.
