The Super Eagles have expressed their condolences to the individuals who lost their lives while spectating the AFCON semi-final match between Nigeria and South Africa on Wednesday.

SportXparte reports that on Wednesday night, tragedy struck as some Nigerians (at least five) reportedly lost their lives while watching the semi-final match between Nigeria and South Africa played in Cote d’Ivoire.

Among the victims was Cairo Ojougboh, a former Executive Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

The Super Eagles squad and officials have since paid their last respects to the deceased. The heartbreaking moment was captured on video, which also showed coach Jose Peseiro and his coaching staff paying their respects with a minute of silence.

Following the tribute, Chidozie Awaziem, a 27-year-old central defender from Primeira Liga club Boavista, led a short prayer after instruction from Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa.

Awaziem prayed for God’s protection over Nigerians who will be watching the upcoming final match between his team and the host country, Côte d’Ivoire.

“Yesterday we lost four good Nigerians because of the game and hold a minute silence … They need our support right now, and Insha Allah, on Sunday, we are going to lift that trophy for them,” Musa said in a short video while calling for support for the deceased families.
