Burkina Faso and Algeria share spoils on Saturday in their second game in Group D of the ongoing 2023 AFCON.

Sportxparte reports that Burkina Faso demonstrated their resilience and proved that they cannot be underestimated in the 2023 AFCON. They came close to causing an upset against the formidable Algerian team.

Back in 2013, Burkina Faso made a remarkable impact in the African football competition by reaching the final, surprising the entire continent. However, their dream of winning the title was cut short by the Super Eagles of Nigeria, who secured a 1-0 victory.

Now, the Stallions of Burkina Faso are on the brink of another impressive run in the tournament. Despite facing relentless pressure from the Algerian side, they managed to hold their ground.

The clash between the two teams took place at the Stade Bouaké in Ivory Coast. It was during the first 45 minutes, in the stoppage time, that the Stallions scored the opening goal of the match.

However, just six minutes into the second half, Algeria showcased their strength as contenders for the 2023 AFCON. Baghdad Bounedjah, who plays as a striker for Qatar Stars League club Al Sadd, scored the equalizer in the 51st minute.

The game took an interesting turn when the goal was scored, leading both teams to intensify their efforts in search of a victory. However, it wasn’t until the final 20 minutes of the match that a winner emerged.

Bertrand Traoré, the Aston Villa winger, initially seemed to secure the victory for Burkina Faso with his goal in the 71st minute. Yet, the Algerian side didn’t give up and continued to fight back.

Their perseverance paid off in the 5th minute of stoppage time when Bounedjah once again stepped up and equalized, resulting in a 2-2 draw.

As a result of this draw, the Burkinabès currently sit at the top of Group D with 4 points from two games. They are two points ahead of second-placed Algeria, pending the outcome of the match between Angola and Mauritania later tonight at 6 p.m., January 20.
