La Liga Roundup: Barcelona Move Within Touching Distance Of The Title
Barcelona’s late surge to defeat Osasuna, combined with Real Madrid’s win at Espanyol a day later, has set up a potentially title-deciding clásico next weekend.
Across Spain, it was a decisive round with ramifications from top to bottom.
Barcelona edges Osasuna and Move One Step from the Title
Barcelona’s 2–1 win over Osasuna at Montjuïc has placed them in a position to clinch a second consecutive La Liga crown. And they could do it next weekend against none other than Real Madrid.
Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres struck in the final 10 minutes to pull Hansi Flick’s team over the line. Substitute Marcus Rashford, introduced to inject urgency. He delivered a superb cross for Lewandowski to power home an 81st-minute header.
The Polish striker’s goal sparked an intense closing spell in which Barcelona pushed aggressively for a second.
Five minutes later, Ferran Torres provided it, finishing confidently to place Barça on the brink of the title. Raúl García’s 89th-minute header for Osasuna threatened to create late nerves. But the champions-elect held firm.
That result temporarily put Barcelona 14 points clear, but Madrid’s Sunday response trimmed the gap to 11 meaning the clásico now becomes decisive. Only a Real Madrid victory next weekend can delay Barcelona’s coronation.
Real Madrid keeps the Title Race Alive For Now
Real Madrid is bruised by poor form and weakened by injuries including the continued absence of Kylian Mbappé. They entered their trip to Espanyol knowing they were virtually out of the title fight already.
But Álvaro Arbeloa’s side refused to gift Barcelona an early celebration.
Vinícius Júnior delivered a sensational second-half brace to secure a 2–0 win. His opener came after a brilliant exchange with substitute Gonzalo García, slicing through two defenders before finishing inside the near post.
Ten minutes later, he doubled the lead with a spectacular strike, assisted by a clever Jude Bellingham backheel.
The match was not without controversy. Vinícius and Omar El Hilali clashed throughout the first half, with El Hilali initially shown a red card for a foul on the Brazilian. VAR intervened, downgrading it to a yellow.
Madrid controlled the ball but struggled to generate clear chances for much of the match. Even with the win, their title hopes remain mathematical rather than realistic.
Unless they win at Barcelona next week, the league will return to Catalonia.
Atlético Madrid Triumph with Youth Ahead of Their Arsenal Clash
Atlético Madrid is prioritising Tuesday’s Champions League semifinal second leg against Arsenal. He travelled to Valencia with a rotated squad and still emerged with a 2–0 victory powered by academy brilliance.
Diego Simeone, marked his 1,000th match as a head coach. Left out key names such as Julián Álvarez, Alexander Sørloth, and Giuliano Simeone due to minor fitness concerns following the first leg in midweek.
He instead called up nine youth players, and two of them stole the show. Iker Luque scored in the 73rd minute, and Miguel Cubo added another in the 82nd.
The win keeps Atlético in fourth place and on track for another Champions League berth next season.
The near-moment of the match, however, belonged to Nahuel Molina, who unleashed a thunderous effort from the halfway line. It crashed off the angle of the post and bar a strike that would have instantly gone viral had it dropped an inch lower.
Valencia, meanwhile, sit 13th and remain uncomfortably close to the relegation zone despite their competitive performance.
Simeone reflected later on X, thanking everyone “who has accompanied and helped me reach this figure” since he began coaching in 2006.
His longevity at Atlético 795 of his 1,000 matches remains one of European football’s defining managerial eras.
Valverde Reaches 500 Matches as Athletic Continue to Impress
Ernesto Valverde celebrated his 500th match as Athletic Club manager with a 4–2 win over Alavés. Spain international Nico Williams delivered a standout performance, scoring twice as Athletic continue to push for a European place.
To commemorate Spain’s Mother’s Day, Athletic players wore their mothers’ surnames on their shirts a gesture widely praised across the league.
Villarreal Clinch Champions League Qualification in Style
Villarreal will return to the Champions League next season after crushing Levante 5–1. Georges Mikautadze scored twice as Marcelino’s side mathematically secured a top-four finish.
Villarreal’s surge this spring has transformed a once-unstable campaign into one of Spain’s standout stories. With depth, attacking flair, and defensive structure all improving simultaneously. They look poised to become a genuine threat in Europe once again.
Celta Tighten Their Grip on Sixth as Getafe Slip Again
Celta Vigo strengthened their hold on a potential Europa League spot with a 3–1 victory over Elche, a performance defined by clinical finishing and midfield control.
Getafe, on the other hand, stumbled to a 2–0 defeat at home to Rayo Vallecano, further complicating their bid to finish in the top half.
