Luton Town Announces The Sensational Signing Of Ex-Chelsea Star
Luton Town have announced that they have completed the signing of former Chelsea and Nigeria International Victor Moses.
Despite hopeful expectations for their return to the Championship, the Hatters faced a grim start to the new season.
Rob Edwards’s side have accumulated just one point from a possible 12, leaving the club sitting in 23rd position in the second-tier standings.
However, Luton and Edwards have sought to improve their situation by adding Nigeria international Moses to their squad on a free transfer.
The versatile wide man had been available ever since his time at Spartak Moscow, which has lasted since October 2020, had come to an end at the end of last season.
Why did they sign him?
Even though Moses is not yet at peak fitness and has only played 60 minutes in a behind-closed-doors match, Edwards has taken action to add more quality and depth to his squad.
Speaking to the club’s official website, he said, “Victor is one we’ve been talking to for quite a while. He trained with us last week and played 60 minutes in a behind-closed-doors game, and we decided because we think he’s able to come in and help us.
“He gives us more strength in depth and versatility because he’s someone who can play both sides or as a number ten.
“He’s played for so many different clubs in different ways and shapes, and under different managers, so he’s tactically aware. We think he’s someone who can provide some really good competition for us.
“I don’t want to put too much pressure on him and expect too much too soon. He’s not going to come in and start the games straight away. He’s got to get used to what we do and how we play, but he’s fit, he’s able to come in and affect it now, and he makes the squad stronger.”
An under-rated former Chelsea star
At 33 years old, Moses is past his prime, and the fact that he has only made 84 appearances for Spartak Moscow since the resumption of football following the coronavirus pandemic highlights that his time with the Russian club has not gone as hoped.
However, as well as accumulating the second most games for one club in his career, he still left with 10 goals and 10 assists to his name.
Moses rarely gets mentioned as a former Chelsea star, but he remarkably scored in each of the four quarter-final and semi-final fixtures in the successful 2012-13 Europa League triumph.
Additionally, he was a key player in Antonio Conte’s Premier League-winning season 2016-17, starting 29 matches and contributing a total of 18 goals and 12 assists across 128 appearances for Chelsea.
Luton will be his 10th club in total, having also represented Crystal Palace, Wigan Athletic, Liverpool, Stoke City, West Ham United, Fenerbahce, and Inter Milan.
