Mascherano Steps Down After Leading Inter Miami to Historic Success

Inter Miami CF head coach Javier Mascherano has announced his decision to step down from his role for personal reasons.
Mascherano leaves behind a legacy defined by unprecedented achievements, record-breaking performances, and a transformative impact on one of MLS’s fastest-rising clubs.
His departure closes a chapter that delivered Inter Miami’s first-ever MLS Cup title and the most successful season in the club’s history.
Mascherano’s Statement
As part of the club’s official announcement, Mascherano shared an emotional message reflecting on his tenure, “I want to let everyone know that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my tenure as head coach of Inter Miami CF.
”First and foremost, I would like to thank the Club for the trust they placed in me. Every employee who is part of the organization is part of the collective effort.
”But especially the players, who made it possible for us to experience unforgettable moments.
”I also want to thank the fans and La Familia, because none of this would have been possible without them.
I will always carry with me the memory of our first star, wherever I am. I will continue to wish the Club all the best moving forward. I do not doubt that the Club will continue to achieve success in the future.
”Sending you all a big hug, and thank you for everything,” said Mascherano.
Club Leadership Responds to a Historic Tenure
Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas also released a statement honouring Mascherano’s contributions and impact.
“Javier will forever be part of this Club’s history and will always hold a special place in the Inter Miami CF family. Not only for being a key part of unforgettable achievements, such as winning the MLS Cup and the team’s historic performance at the Club World Cup.
”But also for the example he set through his dedication and daily work leading the team. We respect his decision and are deeply grateful for everything he contributed, wishing him nothing but the very best in his professional and personal future.”
A Record-Breaking 2025 Season
Mascherano’s first season in charge was nothing short of sensational. He guided Inter Miami to one of the most dominant and historic campaigns in MLS history.
Across all competitions, Inter Miami scored 101 goals, the highest tally ever recorded by an MLS team in a single season. Their 20 postseason goals also set a new league record.
The team’s workload was unprecedented too, as they navigated 58 matches across domestic and international competitions organization the most ever played by a U.S. club in a single season.
International Breakthrough in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup
Mascherano also oversaw Inter Miami’s historic run in the FIFA Club World Cup, where they became the first MLS team to reach the knockout stages.
The club achieved milestones never before reached by any side from the league or from the wider CONCACAF region.
Inter Miami became the first CONCACAF team to defeat European opposition in an official international match. And the first club from the United States to claim a victory in the tournament.
These accomplishments placed Inter Miami on the global stage and demonstrated that their success extended well beyond domestic competition.
Regional Excellence Continues
In regional play, Inter Miami reached the semifinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup and advanced to their second Leagues Cup final in only their third appearance.
This consistency illustrated the depth and adaptability Mascherano instilled in the squad across multiple formats and competitive demands.
Guillermo Hoyos Takes Charge
With Mascherano’s exit, the club announced that Guillermo Hoyos will take over as first-team head coach for the upcoming matches.
Hoyos brings more than two decades of experience as a professional footballer. This ranges from coaching résumés spanning Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Bolivia, Greece, and Cyprus.
He previously managed the Bolivian national team and also has youth development experience from his time at FC Barcelona.
Since joining Inter Miami, Hoyos has overseen the club’s professional pathway development system. While serving as sporting director, making him a familiar and trusted figure within the organization.
