Mexico Withdraws Bid To Host 2036 Olympics

Mexico has dropped out of the race to host the 2036 Olympics.

Sportxparte reports that the development was confirmed by the president of the National Olympic Committee (COM), Maria José Alcala.

Mexico reportedly faced stiff competition from other countries like South Korea, India, Egypt, and Qatar, who have also expressed interest in hosting the 2036 Games, the main reason for its withdrawal.

COM stated that instead of pursuing the 2036 Olympics, they will now focus on potentially bidding for the 2036 Summer Youth Games.

Mexico’s withdrawal could alter the dynamics of the 2036 Olympics race, giving an edge to the remaining contenders.

Sportxparte understands that hosting the Olympics requires significant investment, and Mexico might have prioritized other financial needs over this large-scale event.

If Mexico pursues the Youth Games, it could be a strategic move to invest in young athletes and prepare them for future Olympic competitions.

Some Mexicans, however, have expressed disappointment over the withdrawal, while others saw it as a pragmatic decision given the challenges.
Some commentators believe that Mexico should prioritize addressing domestic issues like poverty and insecurity before hosting such a large international event.

“We had a talk with the International Olympic Committee and we saw that the competition is very tough,” Mexican Olympic Committee head Maria Jose Alcala told reporters earlier on Tuesday.

In October 2022, Alcala and, subsequently, Marcelo Ebrard, the foreign minister, made an announcement regarding Mexico’s aspiration to host the 2036 Olympics.

If successful, it would mark the second occasion for the Latin American nation to serve as the host of the Summer Games.

Back in 1968, Mexico City had the privilege of hosting the Olympics, situated at an elevation of 2,240 meters (7,350 feet) above sea level.
