Serie A Preview: Relegation Tension And European Dreams

Published

on

co the Serie A season enters its decisive phase, the upcoming weekend promises a compelling slate of fixtures loaded with consequence at both ends of the table.

‎Below is a complete breakdown of the five standout clashes.

‎Bologna vs Roma

‎Meeting for the fourth and final time this season, Bologna and Roma reconvene at Stadio Dall’Ara. The dynamic between the two clubs has dramatically shifted since their Europa League duel last month.

‎Each side has one win and a draw from their previous encounters this season. But Roma enters the contest with far more on the line.

‎Bologna’s season has effectively fizzled out. Vincenzo Italiano admitted after his side’s lethargic 2–0 defeat to Juventus that the campaign is “essentially over.”

‎Eliminated from Europe and the Coppa Italia and marooned in mid-table, the Rossoblu appear destined to finish far from the European places.

‎Their home form has been particularly alarming, with six losses from eight league fixtures at the Dall’Ara in 2026 already more than they recorded in the whole of 2024 and 2025 combined.

‎Roma, by contrast, remains in the Champions League hunt despite persistent internal turbulence.

‎A 1–1 draw against Atalanta last week extended their inconsistent run. And tensions between Gian Piero Gasperini and sporting director Claudio Ranieri have fuelled talk of a potential summer shake-up.

‎The Giallorossi sit sixth and are still five points off the top four, knowing anything less than a win could doom their European ambitions.

‎Their away form provides little reassurance, with three straight road defeats. But their motivation vastly outweighs Bologna’s.

‎Roma also have the chance to complete a league double over their rivals for the first time since 2020.

‎Team news

‎Bologna remain without Lukasz Skorupski, Nicolo Casale, and Thijs Dallinga. While Federico Bernardeschi faces a fortnight on the sidelines.

‎Riccardo Orsolini should retain his place after ending a long home goal drought recently. But doubts persist in goal, where Federico Ravaglia may be challenged by highly rated 18-year-old Massimo Pessina.

‎Roma will rely again on Mile Svilar, statistically the league’s best goalkeeper since the start of last season with a 77% save rate. Wesley returns, and Paulo Dybala may also be available, though Lorenzo Pellegrini, Manu Kone, Artem Dovbyk, and Evan Ferguson are out.

‎Donyell Malen is expected to continue leading the line after scoring ten goals in thirteen league appearances since January.

‎Prediction: Bologna 1–2 Roma

Roma’s desperation for Champions League football, combined with Bologna’s fatigue and woeful home form.

Genoa vs Como

‎Como arrived at Stadio Ferraris emotionally drained and in crisis mode after collapsing late in their Coppa Italia semi-final against Inter.

‎Leading 2–0 on the night and headed for a historic final, Cesc Fabregas’ side conceded three goals in the last half hour, sealing a crushing 3–2 aggregate defeat.

‎This followed back-to-back league losses to Inter and Sassuolo, leaving Como five points off Juventus in the race for the fourth Champions League spot. Their once-impeccable form has faltered at the worst possible moment.

‎Genoa, however, is reborn under Daniele De Rossi. After a poor start under Patrick Vieira, the Ligurians have surged up the table, winning five of their last seven home matches.

‎Safety is virtually assured, and the mood around Marassi is transformed. De Rossi has averaged more points per match than Fabregas, and Genoa now aims for a top-half push.

‎The sides drew earlier this season, with Caleb Ekuban scoring a late equaliser. And Genoa have not beaten Como since the latter’s return to Serie A.

‎Team news

‎Barcelona remains without Sergi Roberto, Mergim Vojvoda, and Jayden Addai, though Assane Diao should be fit to start. Fabregas is expected to revert to his preferred four-man defence, with Martin Baturina and Nico Paz likely to support Tasos Douvikas.

‎Rodriguez is also in contention.

‎Genoa welcomes back Mikael Ellertsson, Ruslan Malinovskyi, and Morten Frendrup from suspension. While Colombo continues his best scoring season with seven goals.

‎Ekhator and Tommaso Baldanzi may retain their roles supporting him, while Vitinha pushes for a return. Norton-Cuffy and Maxwel Cornet remain out.

‎Prediction: Genoa 2–2 Como

Como’s fatigue and Genoa’s momentum should make for a fast, open contest. Both sides possess enough attacking quality to find multiple goals in a well-balanced draw.

‎Fiorentina vs Sassuolo

‎Fiorentina’s 1–1 draw at Lecce extended their unbeaten run to six matches and put them within sight of mathematical safety.

‎Paolo Vanoli’s side has regrouped well since their Conference League exit and continues to grind out valuable results without a reliable goalscorer.

‎Their last eight league goals have all been scored by different players, reflecting a collective effort necessitated by Moise Kean’s ongoing fitness problems. Stadio Franchi has also become a more positive venue again. with Fiorentina unbeaten at home since February.

‎Sassuolo travel to Florence aiming to consolidate a superb first season back in the top flight. Under Fabio Grosso, the Neroverdi sit comfortably in the top half with 45 points from 33 games more than any promoted side at this stage in the past decade.

‎Their 3–1 win in the reverse fixture underscored their threat, though their defensive frailties early in matches remain a concern.

‎Team news

‎Fiorentina remain without Kean, Niccolo Fortini, and Tariq Lamptey, and Marin Pongracic is suspended. Robin Gosens and Fabiano Parisi are doubts, though Brescianini is nearing full fitness.

‎Jack Harrison should support Roberto Piccoli once again, having contributed decisively in recent weeks.

‎Sassuolo misses Domenico Berardi through suspension and could line up with Cristian Volpato on the right. Pinamonti and Nzola are both in contention to start after the latter impressed last week.

‎Goalkeeper Arijanet Muric is expected to return, while Josh Doig is available again after suspension.

‎Prediction: Fiorentina 2–1 Sassuolo

The Viola’s motivation to secure survival should lead to a tight encounter. Sassuolo remains dangerous but vulnerable, especially early in games.

‎Torino vs Inter Milan

‎Inter Milan arrive in Turin with one hand firmly on the Scudetto, and they could be officially crowned champions on Sunday depending on AC Milan’s later result against Juventus.

‎Cristian Chivu’s squad is also fresh off a dramatic comeback win over Como in the Coppa Italia, sealing a place in next month’s final.

‎Inter’s form is exceptional. Four straight league wins, each with at least three goals, reflect a team accelerating towards the finish line.

‎Their away record is formidable, with twelve victories from sixteen trips, and they have beaten Torino by a combined 6–0 margin in their last three visits.

‎Torino, meanwhile, looks revitalised under Roberto D’Aversa, with four wins from seven since he took charge. Safety is secure, morale is up and their home form is perfect under the new manager.

‎Yet the gulf in class between the sides is significant.

‎Team news

‎Inter remain without captain Lautaro Martínez and could also lose Alessandro Bastoni to an ankle issue, though his status remains unclear.

‎Marcus Thuram, who has scored six goals in four games against Torino, should lead the line alongside Ange-Yoan Bonny or Pio Esposito.

‎D’Aversa welcomes back Ardian Ismajli from suspension, and Duván Zapata should return to the bench. Tino Anjorin and Zakaria Aboukhlal remain unavailable. Giovanni Simeone, in excellent home scoring form, is likely to start alongside Che Adams.

‎Prediction; Torino 0–2 Inter Milan

Inter’s superior quality, motivation, and form should prove decisive. Torino’s resurgence deserves praise, but they are unlikely to halt the title charge.

‎AC Milan vs Juventus

‎The final match of the weekend carries enormous weight. If Inter beat Torino earlier, AC Milan will step onto the San Siro turf needing a victory to delay their rivals’ coronation.

‎More importantly, both Milan and Juventus remain locked in the battle for Champions League positioning.

‎AC Milan have stumbled in recent weeks, but their narrow win at Verona steadied the ship. Concern remains over their offensive output, with Rafael Leao and Christian Pulisic suffering notable dips in form.

‎Milan has managed only a single goal per match over the last ten rounds. A dramatic slump for a team that had previously blown opponents away with pace and transition play.

‎Juventus, however, arrives in excellent shape under Luciano Spalletti. They have lost only once since his appointment, sit fourth with a five-point cushion, and have conceded just one goal across their last six league fixtures.

‎They have also kept clean sheets in their last five Serie A meetings with Milan.

‎Team news

‎Milan boasts a fully fit squad, with all attacking options available to Max Allegri. Pulisic and Leao may start again, but competition from Christopher Nkunku, Niclas Füllkrug, and Santiago Giménez adds intriguing selection complexity.

‎Juventus misses only Juan Cabal and Arkadiusz Milik, while Dusan Vlahović faces a late fitness test. Mattia Perin, Khephren Thuram, Emil Holm, and Vasilije Adzic have returned to full training.

‎Kenan Yıldız, who has delivered sixteen goal involvements this season, should feature after managing a knee issue.

‎Prediction: AC Milan 1–1 Juventus

Milan’s strong home record against elite opposition and Juventus’ defensive solidity point toward a low-scoring stalemate that benefits both sides in their Champions League pursuits.
