South Africa Kicks Morocco Out Of 2023 AFCON Title Race
On Tuesday night, South Africa caused a major upset in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) by eliminating the highly regarded Moroccan national team.
In contrast to South Africa, who entered the 2023 AFCON as underdogs, Morocco was considered the favourites to win the 2023 tournament in Cote d’Ivoire.
This was due to their impressive performance in the previous edition of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where they became the first African country to reach the semi-final stage.
Many football enthusiasts anticipated that Morocco would continue their strong form in the 2023 AFCON held in Ivory Coast. However, they were unable to meet the high expectations placed upon them.
At the Stade de San Pédro, the Moroccan team faced a determined South African side who were eager to achieve the seemingly impossible. In a stylish manner, South Africa successfully accomplished their goal.
The first half of the match ended in a goalless draw, intensifying the second half. However, the South African team maintained their composure and held their ground throughout the game.
In the 57th minute, Evidence Makgopa scored the opening goal for Bafana Bafana, securing their victory.
Throughout the regulation time, the South African team held onto their narrow lead and received a significant advantage when Morocco’s Sofyan Amrabat was given a red card in the 94th minute.
Just a minute later, Teboho Mokoena extended the lead for the Bafana Bafana, resulting in a final score of 2-0 in favour of South Africa. Next, the Bafana Bafana will face Cape Verde in the quarter-final stage of the tournament at 9 p.m. on February 3rd.
