Chelsea Suffers Another Late Blow Against Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace managed to secure a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Selhurst Park, thanks to an equalizer from Jean-Philippe Mateta.
This match marked a continuation of Chelsea’s struggles, as they have now gone four league matches without a win, recording two draws and two losses in that span.
A Rocky Start for Chelsea
The match began with Chelsea looking to assert their dominance early on, and they did just that, breaking the deadlock in the 14th minute. Jadon Sancho, who has been a key player for the Blues this season, displayed his skill with a brilliant dummy that left the Palace defense momentarily bewildered.
He then sprinted towards the backline and delivered a precise layoff to Cole Palmer, who calmly slotted the ball past Crystal Palace goalkeeper, Dean Henderson.
With this early goal, Chelsea seemed to have the momentum on their side, pressing for a second goal and nearly doubling their lead shortly after. A well-executed free-kick found Pedro Neto, whose header was directed towards Nicholas Jackson.
However, Jackson failed to convert from close range, missing a golden opportunity to extend Chelsea’s advantage. Despite Chelsea’s early dominance, they were unable to capitalize further, allowing Palace to gradually find their footing as the first half drew to a close.
Palace’s Resilience
The second half saw a rejuvenated Crystal Palace side emerge from the locker room. They began to create more chances, with Ismaïla Sarr delivering a dangerous cross that found Eberechi Eze.
Unfortunately for the Eagles, Eze’s first-time side-foot finish drifted just wide of the far post, a miss that could have changed the complexion of the match.
As the hour mark approached, Palace continued to apply pressure, with Mateta coming close to scoring when his strike was deflected over the bar by Chelsea defender Levi Colwill. The Eagles were firmly in the match and began to look increasingly dangerous, displaying a newfound confidence that had been missing earlier in the season.
The Equalizer
With less than 15 minutes to go, Chelsea’s failure to add to their first-half lead would come back to haunt them. An error from Palmer allowed Mateta to capitalize on a swift Palace counter-attack. Mateta, displaying composure under pressure, finished low past Robert Sánchez, leveling the score at 1-1.
In the closing stages, Chelsea’s Enzo Fernández found himself in a precarious position, as he was perhaps fortunate to escape a second yellow card.
However, that was the least of Chelsea’s concerns, as they watched two crucial points slip away, leaving them frustrated and unable to regain their earlier momentum.
Implications for Both Teams
For Crystal Palace, the draw is a positive result that reflects their recent resurgence after a rocky start to the season. With a record of four wins, five draws, and just two losses in their last 11 matches, the Eagles have climbed the Premier League table to 15th place.
However, their home form remains a concern, with only two wins in their last 11 matches at Selhurst Park (W2, D5, L4).
On the other hand, Chelsea’s inability to secure a win continues to dampen their title aspirations. The draw leaves them nine points behind league leaders Liverpool, with the added burden of having played two more games.
