World Cup 2026: Can Senegal Repeat Their 2002 Miracle?
Senegal captain, Kalidou Koulibaly believes the Lions of Teranga have everything required to make a major impact at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
He points to the exceptional quality, experience, and winning mentality within the squad.
The West African nation heads into the tournament full of confidence after securing qualification with an unbeaten record. And Koulibaly has made it clear that Senegal are not travelling to North America simply to participate.
They are aiming to compete with the very best.
With a talented generation of players, experienced leaders, and memories of one of African football’s greatest World Cup stories still serving as inspiration.
Senegal believes they can once again challenge on the global stage.
Senegal’s Growing World Cup Legacy
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be Senegal’s fourth appearance at football’s biggest tournament.
Since making their debut in 2002. The Lions of Teranga have established themselves as one of Africa’s most consistent international teams.
They have qualified for the tournaments in 2002, 2018, 2022, and now 2026.
Across their previous 12 World Cup matches. Senegal have recorded five victories, three draws, and four defeats while scoring 16 goals and conceding 17.
Their most memorable campaign remains the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan. Entering the tournament as debutants.
Senegal shocked the football world by defeating defending champions France in the opening match before advancing all the way to the quarter-finals.
That historic run remains one of the greatest achievements by an African nation at a World Cup. And it continues to inspire the current generation.
An Unbeaten Road To North America
Senegal’s route to the 2026 World Cup showed both their quality and consistency.
Under head coach Pape Thiaw, the Lions of Teranga navigated the qualification campaign without suffering a single defeat. They sealed first place in Group B of the African qualifiers after a commanding 4-0 victory over Mauritania in their final match on October 14.
Their qualification was not straightforward, however. DR Congo pushed them all the way, eventually finishing just two points behind.
A crucial 3-2 victory away from home against the Congolese side ultimately proved decisive in determining who topped the group.
The unbeaten campaign reinforced Senegal’s status as one of Africa’s strongest teams heading into the expanded 48-team World Cup.
Koulibaly Believes Senegal Can Challenge Anyone

Senegal’s captain Kalidou Koulibaly celebrates after scoring the winning goal against Ecuador in a 2022 World Cup group stage match.
As preparations intensify for the tournament, Koulibaly has spoken confidently about Senegal’s chances.
The experienced defender believes the squad’s quality compares favourably with some of the best teams in world football.
“When you have a squad of that calibre with talented players who have won the (UEFA) Champions League. And are top scorers at their respective clubs… even at European level it’s hard to find a way to get a result against them,” the former Chelsea defender told FIFA.com.
“But we will do everything we can to succeed because representing our country means everything to us. And when you pull on that Senegal shirt. it gives you something extra and makes you want to perform at your best.
”That’s the spirit we’ll be taking into these matches.”
The squad includes established stars who have won major trophies at club level and players performing consistently in Europe’s top leagues.
Combined with their experience from recent international tournaments. Senegal arrive at the World Cup as one of Africa’s leading contenders.
A Familiar Challenge Awaits Against France
The World Cup schedule has already provided an intriguing storyline.
Senegal will open their campaign against France on June 16 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. It will be the second time the two nations have met in the group stage of a World Cup.
Their first encounter remains one of the most iconic moments in African football history.
Back in 2002, Senegal stunned the defending world champions with a famous 1-0 victory. Thanks to Papa Bouba Diop’s unforgettable winning goal. The result sent shockwaves through the football world and announced Senegal’s arrival on the biggest stage.
For Koulibaly, the memory remains as vivid as ever.
“I remember this match like it was yesterday… I was 11 years old at the time and I even remember which classes were there when I watched the game!
“It was pure joy when Senegal legend Papa Bouba (Diop) scored after the cut-back from the great El-Hadji Diouf. It was a truly special moment the goal itself. The joy it sparked among the fans and, of course, the dance celebration.”
The emotional significance of that victory continues to resonate throughout Senegalese football.
Inspired By The Heroes Of 2002

The 2002 FIFA World Cup, where Senegal achieved a 1-0 upset victory over reigning champions France.
Koulibaly revealed that the achievements of the 2002 squad helped shape the ambitions of his generation.
Like many young Senegalese footballers at the time. He was captivated by the celebrations that followed the famous victory over France.
“I still remember copying the dance with all my friends as a kid.
“These moments really strengthened our bond with our country and made us believe that Senegal could go far in major tournaments. I think it’s still an inspiration for us all today.
“All the players of my generation know about the class of 2002. And while today’s youngsters might not be so familiar with them, we want to match their performance, if not improve on it.”
Matching the achievements of that legendary team would require another quarter-final appearance at minimum.
However, Senegal believes this current generation has the talent and experience to potentially go even further.
Leadership Driving Senegal Forward

One of Senegal’s greatest strengths heading into the tournament is the leadership within the squad.
Koulibaly highlighted the influence of several senior players who continue to set standards both on and off the pitch.
“I see it as our duty to set an example, both on and off the pitch. After all, Senegalese people are known for their humility. We’re not there to show off. We are there to show what we can do on the pitch.
“We have a core of experienced players to set an example. When you see Sadio Mane who is the first in the gym, or Edouard Mendy who speaks so well in front of the group.
”And Idrissa Gana Gueye who, despite his age (36), covers more ground than some of the younger players, sets a great example for the rest of the group.
“This is the mentality that has enabled us to win titles in the past.”
The presence of leaders such as Koulibaly, Mane, Mendy, and Gueye provides invaluable experience for a squad that blends youth and maturity.
Their professionalism has helped establish a winning culture that has seen Senegal become Africa Cup of Nations champions and regular participants on the global stage.
Can Senegal Repeat History?
The Lions of Teranga enter World Cup 2026 carrying the hopes of an entire nation. They also have the ambition to create another unforgettable chapter in African football history.
They will begin their campaign against France before facing Norway on June 22 and Iraq in their final group-stage match.
With an unbeaten qualification campaign behind them. A squad filled with elite-level talent, and the inspiration of the famous class of 2002 driving them forward. Senegal arrive in North America believing they can challenge anyone.
As Koulibaly’s words demonstrate, the confidence inside the camp is unmistakable. The question now is whether Senegal can translate that belief into another historic World Cup run.
